I ordered a new set of Neoprene Valve Cover gaskets being that my old rubber ones were all gunky and craked and causing a leak on the passenger side head. Aside from that, helpin out an ATV rider on Sunday, the F**** finished breaking my already damaged front grille, so I ordered a new one as well from Dap.
Then yesterday I busted my CV while trying to pass through some really thick mudd (CV was from Atlantic British and if im not mistaken, the brand was BritPart ). There was no bypass and too many trees on either side to whip out the machete, so I had to go through. It was a pretty nasty sound to be honest, it almost hurt me as well..lol. I was able to finish the trail and drive home being that the race inside had not totally shattered. Luckily I had a spare one at home from the last CV job I did, I had my old one rebuilt. So today was the day! I cut my grille a little better than the last in order to work the winch. Installed it in no time. Took out the busted CV and installed the rebuilt one. Also packed the bearings with grease and smeared some on the stub axle as well to keep things a little more waterproof. Now the gaskets...Man O Man were those a PITA to replace. Took me about 5 hours! Lots of hoses that didnt want o come loose, a ton of disassembly, old hoses that deteriorated upon manhandling, comming up with new hoses, stuborn bolts for a short guy like myself, i found my knees wanting to bend backwards. I got the job done but now im really sore. As for the condition of the engine...take a look... ![]() ![]() Is this good, normal, or bad? I come from working on hot rods and as far I can can remember, I dont think ive ever seen anything this RED under the valvecovers. Atleast there wasnt any gunk built up like ive seean on previous engines. Besdies the color everything seems to be alright. I've got 140k on the clock. What say the more experience Rover Gurus?

I've seen that color red on a few Rovers I've dismantled. I always assumed it was the result of cheap oil and infrequent changes. I bet your valley is bright red as well. I know when I disasembled the the engine I had in my daily driver, after 100K miles the heads, rocker assemblies and valley looked brand new. Granted, I always used synthetic oil and changes it religiously at 3K miles.

I try out different things, but i DO change my oil religiously every 3K since I play in water alot. Most of the time I end up using Quakerstate 4x4 Syn. Blend.

Penzoil has one of the lowest ratings amoung repair shops because t=of the build up it causes.
I would suggest you drain your oil replacing it with 6 qts. of ATF and let it idle for 20 minutes, this will really help towards cleaning up the crude. Might want to also consider Castrol as a better oil for your engine. I make a habit of using an engine flush once every 10,000 miles and at 80,000 plus miles, you can eat out of it, no build up or oil pressure problems. Mike |

Oil from PA has high ash content, thus the buildup. Chevron makes good oil, too. My dad had a 73 Chevy PU with 454, always ran Chevron oil (he was a Chevron dealer duh!). He tore it down when it had 154k on it, valve train almost looked new, no deposits.
I had a 84 Mustang GT years ago, I ran Pennzoil in it, looked like crap inside when I traded it in. I"ve never used it again. |

What do you use for an engine flush? Before my last oil change I drained a bit of oil out and put a quart of trans fluid in there. Drove around for about a half an hour, then changed the oil. Sorry for the hijack! |

I only have anecdotal evidence, but my '89 wrangkler has 255k miles, and I've used only pennzoil since I've had it (since 140k) and have no complaints. My 98 disco has 189k, and I only use pennzoil since I bought it (since 140k). My 90 Mustang GT has 173k miles, and you guest it, since 140k miles. I use only pennzoil in all of my vehicles and its been great. I also use fram filters in them all. Some would say I live dangerously! ha ha.
So, total of 198k miles of combined pennzoil protection in last 10 years or so, and no issues. Unless your doing synthetic, find a brand you like and stick with it. JMHO. Kieran |

I bought a '89 disco about a year ago, it had done 125K, when I took the rockers off the inside looked like yours Disco1 but without the red, a friend mentioned it was known as the black death. I have since changed the oil twice in 2K miles, I didn't want to risk the engine flush yet, I was told by a mechanical engineer of 40 years experience that if I tried the engine flush first it may cause more problems because the engine was used to running the way it was. So have since changed the oil a couple times to gradually clean it, I'm now running on fully synthetic. Can tell you I've never seen red like that in an engine

Mine looked like that when I bought it at 67k
The PO must have not changed oil regularly! I started putting mobil 1 synthetic in it, ended up selling at 125k. I had no problems, but I never used an engine flush! The oil always ended up brown at only 2000 miles. Oh well, I was told it was from these engines producing so much heat, and the high carbon output of the engine! I am not used to that either. I recently bought a 93RRC with 57k. It is more brownish, but not nearly as clean as my Hondas were even at 200k!![]()
