Question Trans Leak

I took my Disco to a local shop today...because I had a leak of some sort.

The trans is leaking fluid....and they said the seal would have to replaced... They said it would be a big job....and they couldn't do it. Any other rememdies? It's just a small drip....but I'm not so happy w/leaks.

Mike....will u please move here?

Kelli, it's a rover, live with the leak. Unless it's leaking like crazy to a point where you have to add fluid all the time, leave it be.

Hey Steven...it's merely a drip.....sure it won't hurt anything?? What's too much of a drip? I have no idea....do I have to keep adding fluid then???

Is the seal a hard job then or do you know?

Kelli,
Go buy a bottle of Lucas Transmission additive and poor it in. Works pretty well on seal leaks.
Start keeping track, once a week, when the engine is warm, of the tranny fluid level. Make sure to check it when on level ground and with the engine running.

Oh...don't overfill it. Check the fluid level before you add the Lucas Tranny additive. You can use my dipstick if you'd like....

OK..let me start by saying....Steven & Mike...you guys rock as always... You have been to my rescue since day #1 before LRO...

Anyway...don't laugh...BUT....the leak is coming from the seals of the transfer case. Um....is that different than what I posted? I don't know...I just found out...and yes...I feel dumb...

Hold the laughter please....

Kelli,
What are we going to do with you????? Yes there is a difference. Well this could be good for Steven, now he doesn't have to send you his dip stick, he can use it to keep thrack of his tranny leak.
So did this mechanic say exactly what seals, how much$$$? Did he top off the t/case? It only holds a little over 3 quarts, I think and as such can't go too long between checking the oil level. So how many drops are you seeing or how big is the puddle?

Kelli,
Mine has been leaking since the day I brought it home over 6 years ago. I have "topped it off" once during that time. Don't loose any sleep.....or, dreams.

I'm not so sure...about a 50 cent pc. drop I guess. The shop didn't do anything..but tell me what the leak was. They aren't going to fix it....but said to take it transmission place.... WAIT...now that doesn't make sense? Is there a way to check the level in that?

OH MY GOSH...my truck is going to blow up isn't it?

Kelli,
You need to go back to the shop that looked at it and ask then to top off your t/case fluid and ask them how much they had to put in, this will give you a good idea how bad the leak is.
Yes some tranny shopd can or will work on t/cases but many won't. Any goo 4 wheel shop can probably tackel it if it needs it.

Thanks Mike...

I took your advice and went first thing this morning. They didn't have to put much fluid in, but still reccommended me to a transmission place. The leak just started. Of course, I'm all freaked out because I don't know what 'bad amount' is...OR how to check it...

Anyway, I'm going to call the trans place this afternoon......sell my belongings......and find out how bad it is and if I SHOULD get it fixed right away....
