I was under her tonight tearing out the rotoflex shaft so I can drop the '88 - '89 RR twin U-joint shaft driveshaft in ($100 inc shipping from a junkyard on http://www.car-part.com vs $300 for the one in the kit from AB
)I actually saw how much slack I have in the centre diff and its NOT good - I can turn the hand brake drum 40 degrees before the front drive shaft moves! (This is with the centre diff lock engaged) Questions: How long before I HAVE to replace the transfercase? Did I misunderstand the issue with the early Xfer cases? I thought it was the shaft between the transmission and transfer case that developed the slack. Is it normal to have some wobble in the rear pinion shaft - and will replacing the flange and torquing the nut down sort this out?

No- not a double carden unfortunately.
By twin U-joint I meant with one u-joint on each end instead of 1 u-joint and a rotoflex
