What are you pulling by weight or what sort of problem are you having?
Rull of thumb, leave the cooler there that it came with and just drain your fluid more frequently, like every 15 to 20K, it would be better on the tranny.

Well when I reach down with my finger on the gear shift knob it is almost to hot to touch it. I pull a dune buggy and atvs often.

That's not unusual, tranny runns at just under 300 degrees and heat will transfer thru to the shifter.
I still think you wouid be better off just doing more frequent fluid changes.

Just make sure you use a synthetic oil in the transmission, manual or auto they both run hot and a synthetic can handle much higher temps than a mineral oil

I use an aftermarket Trans cooler, and when the temperature reaches 220 deg F it's time to switch on the fan. The ideal temperature for the transmission oil is from 170-190F. Heat will transfer through the gear stick so don't worry unduly about it.

I have thought about doing this as well. I've read of people using dual D1 coolers.

That would be quite a simple and relatively cheap install in my opinion Binary.

If so, seems to me you could mount a second one no problem

ZF4's like to run cool. Therefore adding a tranny cooler will extend its life. You can get them from most auto assessories stores. I have one that they state is for a truck. Your transmission shifter is not actually mounted on the transmission. The only connecting part is a cable. Therefore the temp you are feeling is not likely related to the tranny. To tell whether you tranny is getting hot, simply look at the colour of the oil. If it looks a similar colour to red cordial (new tranny oil colour), it is most likely running OK. If it is the colour of red wine, it is getting too hot. Even though changing the oil more often will help, it will not prevent the damage from running the box too hot.

One thing I definately want to rid myself of is the cooler piping that runs infront of the frame cross member. Since my winch is tucked in, it makes contact with the cable retainers on the winch and if the cable dundles up, it will also make contact.
