Default Transmission issues

Help! Changed transmission fluid in a 1997 Discovery. Proceeded to drive around block and transmission worked fine until driving over speed bump. Slowed down prior to speed bump, proceeded to accelerate after speed bump... no drive. Any suggestions? Could this possibly be an electrical issue?

Also installed new power steering gear box and pump - both appear to be working fine. Changed oil and filter as well.

PS: Old transmission fluid was brown and smelled "slightly" bured.

did you do a flush or a filter/fluid/o-rings and gasket change? maybe the pump is clogged or gone out, its these problems making me terrified to change mine out.

im on a inbetween red and brown fluid currently, and 181,000 miles, changed at least 2 times before i owned . i am afraid of what happened to yours happening to mine. I am interested in additional input on these fluid change issues from anyone as well.

Having been there lately ... I went through two spare transmissions both with high mileage. If it works at all then I would leave it alone if you don't know the service history. I just spent the big bucks finally getting the ZF HP22 rebuilt in mind. $650 in parts, $ 500 labor + installation. Did the TC while I was at it ... typical money pit for a high mileage Discovery.

BTW, always check for TC being in neutral, and basics like broken u-joint, spider gears, etc. Basic check for that is to see if Park still holds the car with TC in any position other than neutral, but not if it is in neutral. If Park does not hold the car with TC enganged then something in the driveline failed (or the parking pawl broke).

I'm thinking the filter may have not been secured properly and it fell off or it was jarred just enough for the seal to be compromised.

Or well. Its hosed and its rebuild time.

Lock your cdl and see if it changes anything.

Run it through all the gears. when it park does the park pawl work? (push the truck back and forth with it in park, if it stops, its working) I ask this to see if the shift cable is still connected and working.

If you are really feeling froggy you could put a pressure tester on the cooler lines to see if its making pressure.

Hey All,

Guess what? Somehow, knocked the transfer case in Neutral, I know . . . bone head! It works fine. However, have another problem. Got a 1313 code, lowspeed misfire and excessive vapor. If I run the motor up over 2,200 RPM get a multiple misfire. And then many more codes!!!! We did pull both heads did new gaskets and all back together. Problem did not go away. No water in oil and NOT overheating, but do have some moisture in oil cap. Anyone have any wisdom on this? Thanks!

Are you sure that code isn't 1513? (open coil malfunction)

Hey Derek,

No, do not have 1513. Just put in new wire set, did improve slightly, drove it longer than before, but coded again with 1316 and 1158. Still have the misfire. Any further wisdom?
