I would read up on threads about getting the bolts detached from the exhaust manifold to the Y exhaust system. I just replaced the transfer case on mine and although it was not necessary (It will be to remove the transmission) I was told I would have to remove the exhaust.
I removed it on the donor truck I was taking the good transfer case out of and even after taking a lot of time using PB Blaster and some other techniques, it still was tough. I don't believe there are any specialized tools other than regular shop tools you will need.
On thing I would recommend after spending several days on my back under both trucks is that if you are going to have to do this on your back, make sure you raise the truck up on 4 jack stands.
On the first truck that I removed the transfer case from, I did put the truck on 4 stands but I did not raise the truck very high on the stands.(Thinking it would be easier to get the case down to the floor with a lower height) It was really tight and difficult to work under.
On the donor truck I took the good transfer case out of, I learned my lesson and raised the truck higher on the stands and it made a huge difference on my ability to move around. (I also had a Creeper)
just my 2 cents....good luck
