Default Trouble Codes - Can someone Please decode?

I have a '97 Land Rover Discovery (4.0L Auto) that I purchased used and I love to death. The engine light was on when I purchased it so I brought it to a Ford dealer (I know Ford did not own Land Rover in '97) and all they could do was read off and give me the trouble codes. I'm hoping one of you could please help me out and tell me what they mean. Thank you in advance, here are the codes: P1316, P1138, P300, P306, PP305, P1176, P1314.

While I'm asking, I think I need to change the headgaskets but you guys can let me know what you think. The engine didn't have any leaks when I bought it but now that I've driven it and changed the oil twice (I'm now running Castrol Synthetic), it's leaking like a sieve. Oil drips down the passenger side of the engine onto the cat and stinks. A little bit of antifreeze has leaked out of the front of the engine but I tasted the oil and it did not taste sweet at all and is also jet black, not milky. Lastly, the oil on the dipstick reeks of fuel. So do these symptoms sound like headgaskets or something else?

I appreciate any information you guys can provide me with.

Default I still need help

I did some digging on this excellent site and found a link to a great site that decodes OBDII codes.

http://www.iequus.com/support/obd2_definitions.php

Here are the descritions of my codes. I would still love to know possible causes and solutions.

P1316 - Misfire causing excessive emissions
P1138 - HO2S failed to switch to lean, bank "A"
P0300 - Random misfire detected
P0306 - Cylinder 6 misfire detected
P0305 - Cylinder 5 misfire detected
P1176 - FMFR correction at maximum positive value
P1314 - Misfire likely to damage catalyst, bank "B"

Wink Okay, I will bite

Hi there from New York. I am Adam and I own a 1996 D1.

You need oxygen sensors and you need to check cylinders 6 and 8 just in case for any spark plug issues and any wire issues.

The majority of the codes are because you have oxygen sensors that are going and need to be replaced. Look around the website, some posts have excellent prices for replacement oxygen sensors. You might as well change the two on the exhaust manifold ,but if you don't want to hear from them for another 60 to 90000 miles, change all of them. There are four and you will be surprised at the price at the dealer.

Reset the ECU and let the truck run for 30 to 110 miles. If you don't have any other problems, the other codes will not reappear and all will be well. You should be blessed. I had a long agonizing trip thru the brier patch, posted elsewhere.

Arrow Quick analysis of codes

P1316 - Misfire causing excessive emissions Oxygen sensor related
P1138 - HO2S failed to switch to lean, bank "A" Oxygen sensor related
P0300 - Random misfire detected
P0306 - Cylinder 6 misfire detected
P0305 - Cylinder 5 misfire detected
P1176 - FMFR correction at maximum positive value Oxygen sensor related
P1314 - Misfire likely to damage catalyst, bank "B"

The rest caused by the wrong data causing excessive fuel going into the engine and misfire caused by excessive fuel and pinging (P1314).

P1138, P1176 Definitely a bad oxygen sensor.P1314 is a detonation code.

Thanks for the great info guys!

Disco Mike,

I picked up two bottles of Seafoam today and dumped one of them into the tank eventhough you said to just get them and call you. I just couldn't resist so I'll pick up another one if we need it for the plan you have. I also picked up Seafoam spray carb cleaner. I tried to spray it as well as I could around the intake manifold and there was no change in the engine speed.

Tomorrow I will pull the plugs and crawl under it and hit the cats. I'm also going to start a thread asking people if they have any experience with running without cats.
