Pioneer makes a shallow subwoofer. You could build the box so the sub fires Down, with 2" to spare, & have the port run forward. That would take a foot or so in height, then build drawers on top & still have of the unit to throw stuff onto...

Edit: Disco, did you take the rear door panel off & replace it with a flat piece? I was thinking of taking off the pocket & rear speaker box, & replacing the works with diamond plate...

I made the width 41 3/4" to hit snug between wheel humps
from the door to seats 25 1/2" ,height 11 1/2 is perfect to set level for bed.

I did not bolt down the cargo box because I still use the jump seats when family is in town. So the box can be pulled out."

Like I had said it works for me, it's main purpose was to keep crap from sliding around and that was accomplished....

if it does what its meant to, then its a good product.

unfortunatly, i built something like that awhile back, only i carpeted it and it was a little more molded to the cargo space shape. it got old for what i needed, so i took it out and its just laying around. im looking for something a little more organized this time around, rather that just a big box.

These sites will give you some ideas:
http://www.bta4wd.com/category12_1.htm
http://www.tanami4wd.com.au/

Or these comments from someone that made one may help:
"I made and installed a set of drawers for my Landrover Discovery last year.
2 drawers side by side with a lift out lid on each side that sits flat where the rear side pockets used to be.

I used xtra heavy duty full extension slides and aluminium sliding door locks to keep the draws shut. Tons of storage, both in the drawers and the flush side pockets. A large flat area on top of the draws for loading up eskys & gear etc and still get to stuff in the drawers, best thing I ever did.

Constructed from 12mm ply, glued & screwed and then contact glued on a very thin type of carpet that is used for lining.

I made a cardboard template of the shape of the rear luggage area and used that to make sure I got a perfect fit. It is bolted into nuts that were existing in the vehicle. Can be removed easily ( I only have it in when camping), takes about 20 minutes to re-fit."

This is on my list of to-do's for the Disco as well. The part I'm having trouble with is Fuel pump access. Yes, they do break down. Therefore, the drawers can only be semi-permanant.

If you are going to be using up the back with the cargo box why not use the rear side quarter sections for your speaker enclosures? Instead of a 12" you could put an 8" or 10" on one side and use the other side for your amp. I've taken my rear moldings off and you could build a suitable enclosure. Your center box (cargo section) would protect the speaker being that you could build them to the same height.

Also I agree with the rhinolining. You can get it in whatever color you want so you could make it look stock if you cared to.

Here is my setup. 1 sheet 3/4 ply, some angle brackets to tie things together, a piano hinge, two window latches and some carpet. The whole unit is secured to the floor. Next step is to disassemble, remove the right rear flip down seat and install an addition bin. Note: the winch fits the rear receiver (front receiver under construction).

stevenr: couldn't you just drop the gas tank to get to the fuel pump? then the cargo would be of no concern

lol, sure, you could do that. if you have a nice afternoon and your tank is fairly empty and the hardware isn't too corroded. or, you can take the 10 min it will cost you to pull out your screw driver and unscrew the access hatch and compression ring. after saying that though, i just picked up a http://www.weatherguard.com/truck_to...p?subcat_id=18 (model 308) and it is heavy as hell. got it for dirt cheap, but not really sure i want to use it or not yet. it does fill the back of the disco perfectly. thinking maybe cut a lift top for it with piano hinge and cut a nice access hole in the bottom. remove drawer, lift up top and have direct access to pump.
