Good evening all, I am the proud and first time owner of a 1997 Disco SD.
140,000 miles, runs excellent. Only mods so far are OME steering stabilizer and a Atlantic British Steering guard, and some OEM parts. I want to put some more performance in the motor. (Performance air intake, Borla exhaust, and don't know of any other bolt on stuff.) I also want to put a bush grille, lights, and a tad bit more ground clearance under me. Nothing extreme as this is my daily driver. Any starter suggestions? And places to shop. I'm in Phoenix, AZ and steet Range Rovers is all you see here. Thanks for any advice. Jeff |

Well it's a pretty big open playing field as far as mods are concerned.
For performance, well the first thing to understand is it will never been a dragster and trying to make it so will get expensive. The engine will respond to the normal mods that all petrol engines respond too. Betting induction and exhaust and then internal. A CAI will work, but if you plan on water wading or drive where it's very dusty a snorkel may be a better bet. Same goes for the air filter, a free flow one will give a small gain in HP but you don't want one that will allow too much dirt and debris enter the engine. Tubular headers (LT's) will work well on the exhaust side along with a good exhaust, Y pipe and high flow CAT. Janspeed make headers for the V8 and lots and lots of companies (UK anyhow) make exhausts. But it's often just as easy and often cheaper to have a custom exhaust made up for the car at a local shop. A simple cam swap will wake the engine up also, not too big or you'll loose the lower end grunt. Same goes for heads, port and polish or simply buy another set. You'll never see MASSIVE hp differences but some fairly simple mods will really wake the engine up and increase throttle response. A popular mod over here is to swap a 4 brl carb on such as a Weber/Edlebrock 500. This makes it easy to tune at home and will usually see a HP gain over the stock EFI setup. I think there are supercharger kits out there, or custom turbo kits as well. You could swap in a bigger displacement motor (4.6) or even stroke the 4.0 to 4.8 if you want, but this will start and get pricey. As for off roading mods, well it depends largly on what sort of terrain you drive on and what you want to do with the vehicle. Suspension lifts are an option for some and will improve ground clearance, but it will also raise the COG and generally reduce on road ability. Larger tyres again will work, but depending on if you go for a lift or trim the arches you are limited to how big. More droop often works well, cranked trailing arms and dislocation cones will allow much greater articulatation and off road ability without sacrificing any on road ability.
