It's a very simple process. Maybe the easiest component replacement you'll do to your rig. I bought a new one at Advance Auto and replaced it a few months ago. Here's the break down:

1. Let the engine cool down. Best bet is to leave it sitting over night.

2. Remove the fan shroud by unbuckling the top part. This will expose everything you'll need to access.

3. Drain the radiator fluid into a bucket by opening the petcock at the bottom.

4. Remove the vicous damper and then the fan. Now is a good time to check the damper for proper operation. It should not spin freely...

5. Remove the serpentine belt by applying negative pressure to the tension pully. (diagram how it is routed before you remove it)

6. Remove the bottom radiator hose at the pump and let the fluid drain into the bucket, remove the top hose. Now is a good time to check condition of the themostat. (Check by dropping into a pot of boiling water to ensure proper operation...it should open.) Now is also a good time to check your fan belt and hoses for damage such as cracking, wear, etc.

7. Remove attachement bolts from pump housing and remember where they go, there are different lengths.

8. Gently pry the pump away from the engine taking care not to score or gouge the mating surface on the engine. (A paint scraper is good for this. Try to stay away from screwdrivers...)

9. Clean the old gasket material off of the mating surface with a plastic scraper. Wipe clean and dry with a clean cloth.

10. Apply thin layer of hi-heat silicon sealant to the mating surface and to the new pump. Place the new gasket on the pump.

11. Align the bolt holes up with the mating surface and insert bolts. Torque to specs (do not overtighten.) Tighten in a diametrically opposed fashion...like you would when putting a tire on your rig.

12. Install everything else in reverse order.

Remember to replenish your fluid. Allow the sealant to cure for at least a couple of hours before testing for leaks.

Now, with all this said, why don't you pick up a hanes manual? They can be purchased at Advance Auto. Hope this helps!

No problem. It's helps to get a good mental picture of what you're about to do :>)

On my '99 w/4.0 it's right up front. The reason to check it when you replace the water pump is because you have the cooling system open and the fluid drained. No need to wait till your truck starts over heating :>)
