Default What final drive diff gears are you running?

Been thinking of swapping out the diff gears to 4.75:1 anyone have any experience with non-stock gears?

I am running 4:11's, from Great Basin Rovers, and 265/75/16 tires.
Why are you thinking about such low gears?

I run 34 inch tyres and a 4.4ltr V8. With this size tyre the end gearing is absically the same as stock.

4.75's in a Rover is getting pretty weak. Be fine for a pavement pounder, though. Be fine off-road, too. But, you would be on borrowed time with a large tire.

Well I've been looking at the gears from Kamdiffs.

They offer 4.75, 4.1 and 3.8:1

http://www.kamdiffs.com/ratios_detailed.htm

According to them the 4.75 gears should be pretty strong, I know a few people who have broken ring/pinion teeth. They also offer upgraded driveshafts, although I don't think I'd worry until I actually broke one.

I run 33.11.50 R15 at present. This is up from stock 28" tyres for 1991 models. These tyres really kill on road accelaration and I'd like something that is capable of going slower in low 1st when off roading. Also the extra umphf offer by the lower gears should be a benifit.

Do you think 4.75 is over kill and I'd be better off with 4.1:1 gears instead. I just don't want the engine bogging on steep inclines while off roading. The diesel makes great low end torque, but only once the turbo's kicked in.

4:75's are awful low. Pinion gear will be tiny, too. Were it me I'd go with the 4:11's.

Well all Series Land Rovers use 4.7:1 so it's not as if they are out of this world.

But the series landrovers had no power to break them. As soon as the went to V8's they went to 3.54's.

Not only no power to break them, no power at all, so they needed the gears to go anyplace. You can go anywhere with real low gears and little HP, but when you add the HP then stuff is going to break. My dad had a 46 Willys Jeep when I was a kid, had 5:33's in it, never broke anything due to the whopping 40 or so HP the flathead 4-banger made. Would climb a tree figuratively speaking but top speed was about 45-50 in overdrive downhill with a large tailwind.
