If only that were true! In fact, the axles (shafts & CVs) on DIs & RRCs are among their weakest links -- 10 spline,,, the trails are littered with 'em. D2's aren't much better, the weak spot being CVs & hubs more so than the actual axle shafts. And this is open!... if you're locked the stock Rover axles on all models you mentioned are insufficiently strong and will twist, bang, boom if not upgraded.

The only Rover axle comparable to a Dana 60 is the Salisbury rear. These too will benefit from upgraded shafts when fully locked.

My friends have all made fun of 'Lemon' at one time or another; until they ride in it. An ex g/f's dad said it was small until he got in it. So once again I left the gas miser with cold air, in the garage and drove the Rover. Because it the coolest.

I find that so strange that Land rover didn't make rovers with very strong axles. I mean Land Rovers to me have extremely strong frames I saw my D1 frame compared to a nissan pathfinder,Toyota pickup ,and ford expedition the D1 was alot bigger and gauge thicker. plus the Drivetrains are bombproof so why didn't Rover make these trucks with stronger axles beats me! either way Rovers are some of the strongest Trucks out there I won't drive nothing else.

I always heard they are built strong like Tanks and very strong frame than land cruisers. All land Rovers I've seen are stock. Jarell's Discovery is the only lifted/modified Disco i've seen. His moms is a total mall crawler

I think why LR decided not to put a heavier duty axle on the trucks was to keep the gross vehicle weight a bit lower, as these trucks already weigh out more than a tank!

The argument I have heard for why Rovers have such weak half shafts is that it was intentional. The reason is that by making the half shaft the weakest link, there was a smaller likelihood of damaging more serious and less trail repairable items. It's a lot easier to pull a broken half shaft on the trail as opposed to rebuilding a diff. Take that for what it's worth. Frankly, I've broken half shafts on my Series III simply pulling away from a stop light.

Yes, Rovers, from a structural perspective, are very strong by I will never understand why the company took so long to upgrade half shafts from 10 spline to 24 spline. All the while, Toyota, Jeep, Mercedes, ect have had stronger half shafts. Why is it that Land Rover never offered factory locking differentials? Mercedes, Jeep and Toyota have for years. How could they take away the locking center diff on Discos for years? Why only two pin differentials? There are too many questionable choices that Rover has made over the years to blindly believe that they are "The best four by four by far."

Don't get me wrong, I love my Rovers, but when I can buy a Rubicon off the showroom floor with lockers, skid plates, ect. and then hear someone say, with a straight face, that only Rovers are built for the trail, I have to wonder what you're smoking. Yes, Rovers are very capable trucks but to deny that Jeep, Toyota, Mercedes, ect aren't capable as well is wrong. I remember seeing a guy in a D90 get stuck everywhere on a trail in MA a few years ago. Meanwhile, his buddy, driving an old FJ40 made it through the same spots without a hitch. In the end, it's my opinion that what it really boils down to is not the capability of the truck, but the capability, or lack, of the driver.

the main reason for pulling the CDL was the ignorant owners who locked the CDL and drive around on pavement, only to demand warranty on the thousands of dollars worth of broken parts.
The Rubi is a cool thing, if you can deal with the other shortcomings in comfort, size etc. Since the Rubi is targeted at people who know what it can do and how it works, there's less chance they'll engage the lockers and break it all to hell on pavement.
Look at how Jeep promotes their stuff too- they actually market their stuff as opposed to just sitting there waiting for someone to buy like Land Rover does.

+1.

Quite frankly, I've always thought the FJ80 was the perfect example of the luxo 4by that the Discovery and Range Rover should have been. Put some better axles with factory lockers under the Rover, and electronics that aren't as crazy as a redheaded ex-girlfriend, and the LR would be the best 4x4xfar.

I enjoy the hell out of my Disco, and I'm well aware of it's shortcomings. BUT, it's perfect for my needs (DD, the perfect transport for all my friends, and the perfect vehicle for driving and camping on the beach), and I love the fit and feel of it. It's relatively small vehicle, but it has a cavernous interior.

My only really major gripe with my LR is that if I break down, I can't just waltz into an AZ, or O'Reilly's and get parts for it.

I guess bottom line is that us LR enthusiasts are just as nucking futs as Jeep enthusiasts: we both know that our respective vehicles have some shortcomings, but try telling us that and we'll smack you silly.

Have a and just be glad you're not driving a Honda

Total opporsit here, I can go into ANY and I mean any motor factors and buy parts for a Land Rover - brakes, shocks, seals, etc all off the shelf and cheap. Jeep parts are a pig to get an f*ing expensive. Eventhough Jeep has been selling cars over here for ~15 years+

Motor mount for a 4.0 Cherokee was going to be over £50 ($90) and a 3 MONTH wait???????

Having said that I do have a soft spot for the Wrangler and would rather like a nice 4.0 YJ to use along side my Discovery.
