What's the best gear oil for me to use - Land Rovers Only

Now that I have a repair manual I'm gonna do my own axle and T-case oil changes. My T-case leaks a little so I'm gonna refill the box back up and I'm doing my own axles. I know the key to rovers is to keep them "fresh" oiled and "wet". I'm finally getting into the DIY mode. ? is whats a good gear oil to use for both. For smooth running and operation.

My disco is my DD now so I have to make sure I keep her insides fresh and "wet"

Well, the T-case is gonna take a couple quarts of plain ATF is all it needs, so no gear oil needed for the T-case.

For the diff fluid/axle fluid, use the weight recommended of course, but for a particular brand, my friend uses Lucas 80/90 gear oil in his, and has not had a problem at all. He used the synthetic gear oil on 84 Chevy Silverado 4x4. I myself am probably also going to use Lucas when I change the dif fluids on mine.

As for brand of ATF, any brand is good, just to throw it out there, Valvoline makes some good stuff.

Whoa, WHOA on the auto transmission fluid in the transfer case!!!!!!!!!

The transfer case uses GEAR OIL NOT ATF!!!!

I have always used 80/90weight Lucas gear oil in both front and rear diffs, and in the transfer case. To make the transfer case job alot easier get yourself a fluid transfer pump from your local auto parts shop( they are anywhere from $10-$15) as it is impossible to get a bottle of GEAR oil to the filler hole without it. Only use ATF in obviously an auto trans. and the power steering system!

Also if you want one of the best gear oils out there, and I am a big promoter of Lucas also, try some of this gear oil from Superior Axle down in Riverside, Ca.
You can find it in some performance shop or order on line. I have been using it ,going on 4 years, because I run a Detro and a T.T.. Detroits can be a little noisey and this oil keeps them running very smoothly. By the way, I also run this in my t/case to help off set the heavy amount of CDL wheeling I do.
The big plus for this oil is that most gear oils are rated as a GL4, good oils are GL5 and this stuff is a GL6. Try finding a bottle with that sort of rating in your favorite auto parts store.

RageRover's suggestion of ATF in your transfer case stems from the fact that he has a Borg Warner unit in his Range Rover. Your Discovery has an LT230, does not have a viscous coupled center diff and therefore uses gear oil. Land Rover recommends 80/90 weight gear oil.

The bloke I just bought a recon. diff from says use only EP90.

I hear what you were told, I am just offering some feedback from one of the largest makers of diffs and axles in the U.S. which says they have some strong experience with diffs.

Oh hell if Amsoil makes it I run it... who am I kidding. I am not even a dealer. haha

My office is about one mile from the pick up warehouse in Arlington, Texas. I order before I leave the office and stop by on the way home and get it. Like stopping at Sonic for a couple of Jr Burgers and a Orange Cream Slush.
