What should I do?
I've had several people talk me out of a 300TDi swap. Please disregard the "cool" factor of the 300 and allow me to hear your wise suggestions as to what should be done when my engine nears the end of its current life.

I too would LIKE a diesel as I wheel in or near water a lot, and during cane season, I dont have to make any long gas lines. I want something I can work on, and can be worked on out on the trail; something reliable; and something that'll last!

I would love a diesel! I know I would be happy, VERY happy with a diesel. I had a Mercedes 300D for 6years. I just sold it last year, and I miss it already!
I would even turn off the radio, just to hear it sing, and the turbo spool up!!... Ok, you get my point!.....BUT! In this case, a 300tdi, or a powerstroke 2.8, is just too costly! The fact is, it would cost @ 15-20k to do it right, and WELL!! If you do it, you are already putting in new radiator, new accessories,...ect, and while you are there, AND spending money, get a new transmission, transfer case. If I had 20k to piss away, and I knew for a fact I would keep this truck until the day I die, then go on ahead!! It still is cheaper than ANY new Land Rover!! In my case, and as much as I love diesels, I would just take a 4.6 block, and beef it up!! It is far cheaper, and will last you just as long as any diesel would with proper maintanence!! It is just your choice, if it is what you want, then DO it. If you get bored with stuff fast DONT do it! If I find something I like, I keep it for a long time. So when I can buy a diesel 110 crew cab high capacity!(good value, and in good shape, not a dog!) I would because I would keep it forever! .....So to sum up my rambleings... a 4.6 would be a smarter expense, but may not be the best CHOICE for you! It's allllllll YOU!!![]()

JC, I may not have many answers, but some opinions. And those answers I do have may not fit a person less than half my age (I know this because AAXD isn't a whole lot older than you, and trust me, we have many spirited debates)
I had a 300 TDi reserved, and I guess you know who from. I had the cost negotiated to about as cheap as I was gonna get it. The price included the new motor mounts, R380 for diesel (they are not the same as the V8 R380, input shaft is different) intercooler/ radiator and a bunch of other little pissy things. I was not going to relocate the LT230, so I didn't need the new drive shafts. I was going to do it myself, because I can. Finally I decided it simply wasn't the best thing to do to my 110. I had just a year or so ago scratchbuilt a 4.2 that makes a 4.6 seem lame, and I knew, if nothing else, I would miss that performance. In the final analysis, all I was going to get was 40% more range from a tank. For $2k I can put a GKN in and get 15% better range. better deal. You would need to get a different ZF box, or at least a new input shaft, hydro pump and governor, and if you thought you were going to go 5 speed, pedal box install and brake mods alone would make you crazy. Another opinion others would argue with me on is the 4.6 vs 4.0. You won't do that cheaply either, get very little difference, and new 4.0 shortblocks are still out there. British Pacific is running a screamin deal on 4.2 shortblocks right now and you can make them run on Gems with no problems Despite how nice the 2.8 International engine is (There is an importer right in Miami, but don't tell hims you want it for automotive, he won't talk to you) there is no reliable source of spares in the US and the initial price of $5500 has doubled from the Canadian folks (one of which has failed to deliver to a few people who have made deposits) There are some kits out there for GM 6.2 installs for way less than Brit 2and a halfs. The 200Tdi is an equally good engine and less money. That's going in (a direct bolt in) the next series truck I build. |

I'm thinkin that the best and most efficient option might be to rebuild and beef up my 4.0 I can't justify the extra power output of anything bigger. When I do tow, its a small trailer I use to carry building materials for Hurriance Relief Ops. I THINK that a beefed up 4.0 will be sufficient off road as well and will make a decent overland vehicle as long as I can get good gas.

What about a Brazilian 4 cylinder power stroke swap, or a Canadian Toyota diesel, what about a Turbo cummins 4 cylinder? Isuzu or even Nissan.
I met a guy in Ocala with a RRC with an imported Canadian Toyota diesel out of land cruiser, it was a sweet rig. |

That'd be an interesting project, but I'd like to keep the structural modifications to a minimum. But I sat down and thought to myself that my truck will see a 300 some day but this is probably not the right time to do such a swap. When I have my weekend D90, my overland D110 and the luxury Rangie (which I will accomplish) then I can turn the Disco into the neverending work truck. I guess for now, while it's still my DD-slash-weekend warrior-slash-work truck, the beefed up 4.0 might be the best option.

Terry- Why on Earth a 200? Those engines are end-of-life for parts support. Getting really hard to source parts for them these days. 300 is much easier.
