It's nice to be 19 and have money be no object but why do a 15-20k engine swap into a 4k unmodded disco? If you really want a 300TDI just wait for a D90 that has already had it done, BY SOMEONE THATS KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING, and be done with it. Stories of 8k diesel swaps are bullshit if you ever want to have it work right. If you want to keep your disco just have the heads done.

LOL...being 19, I guess im just getting a little impatient at times and want to see what the fuss about the 300 is all about. I've read more good than bad. I think I will just calm my ass down and wait to find a restorable 110 with the 200/300 already in there. If I get a 90 I'd DEFINATELY want to keep the V8 in there!

Terry, the twenty thousand dollar question ( i know its not that much but im half cuban, its in my blood to exaggerate)

Whats benefits do you see in a 200 over a 300? I'm interested in knowing your reasoning.

Thanks in advance.

No, what's in your blood is that coffee so thick, the spoon will stand up. That explains why all my Cuban friends are so wired.

The 200 and the 300 are very similar, but, depending on what truck it's going into, one has advantages over the other. A 300 sits much further fwd, and has a long bellhousing. The 200 sits further back and had a very long fan shround. Depends if you want to get the weight over the top of the axle or behind it. There were changes in the timing belt installation, but they both use the same belt. The best conversion is the Zeus gear conversion which does away with the belt entirely, not cheap, and alittle noisy from what I have heard. The 200 was built for a much longer period than the 300, and they sell for way less. Contrary to what Stevey has been told, parts for 200s are readily available, and yes, in the US too.
I still wouldn't do either in your truck, it's not a frugal thing to do on a Disco.
Do yourself a favor and take a ride over and talk ( in Spanish, of coarse)to Lenny or Miguel, he'll probably have something there to look at. What Lenny can't get you, can't be gotten.

LOL...Nah not for the disco...just curious. Man, you know, hes right up the street from my shop and I have YET to stop by. I'm slackin. I know he's got some neat trucks there. I'll try to get up there soon and have a word with him. Does he know you well, if so, I'll tell him you said hello and that you sent me. That way we all win.

Nobody knows me well, but he knows me well enough to remember I beat a grand out of him for sticking me with a salvage title on a RRC. I've always dealt with Miguel. They moved recently. I haven't been to their new place. I hear it's bigger, which is good cuz he has so much stuff. He had a pretty nice project 90 with a 2.5NA in it for real cheap money. That's what you need to get into

Word on the 200 and companies shutting down support came from the owner of the largest Land Rover parts supplier in the world, that's all. I convoyed 600 miles with two other Rovers, one with a 200 and one with a 300. My 4.6 Disco was towing 5200lbs and I still could out-accelerate both of those Defenders and had to constantly slow down when they protested over the CB I was going too fast. I'm not impressed with the diesel conversions, although we do them. My 109 might get a 300, but that's only because I don't want to butcher it for a V8- I'd rather keep it stinky.

JC, I can remember when I was in your shoes, (and I'm sure Terry can attest to this one). I was all gung ho on doing every mod in the book to my RRC(the one from Lenny and Miguel). Things have changed for me now though. From the sounds of it, you take really good care of your truck(probably better than me). Being a fellow Disco owner, I can attest to the fallbacks of the 4.0, especially living in New England where the hills are long and the ZF goes crazy between 3rd and 4th on those 50 mph roads that go through them. I've got 145K on my disco now and it still pulls like a champ, and like you I plan on keeping it around for a while. The thought of a rebuild/engine conversion has crossed my mind several times. I have no doubt that LR designed the truck to perform as an all-arounder before they imported it to the US. My mind is firmly set on keeping it a V8 when mine goes. Whether or not it will be a 4.0 or 4.6 has yet to be decided, though I'm sure I'll end up going with whatever is the cheapest, as is my nature. Anyway. before I ramble on too much, I'll say that without a doubt the cheapest way to go for a Disco is to keep it the way it was when new. By all means do the research on as many options as you can, it'll only help you in the end to make a decision. I recently bought a 109 with the intention of replacing my Disco, Mini, Golf and Range Rover and keeping it as my only car. When the work is finished(probably be a while considering my career field, thankfully Terry has the space to keep it ) I intend to reach that goal. For now though, I say enjoy the truck the way it is, keep saving up so that whatever you decide to do will be possible. I'd worry about enjoying the present/near future with what you have before going too deep into hypotheticals.
