Default Who's wheeling with a 5 speed?

Interested in feedback on how you like the Discovery 5 speed off road and would like to know how long the clutch lasts?

A bonus to a clutc is that if in a bad abind or area you can use the starter to crawl...... shut thr rig off....put in 1st....then turn the key w/o pressing the clutch in!!

all clutches regardless of manufacturer last longer if you know how to drive a stick in the first place.

Fundamental rule number of of Stick vs Auto.

We have a 96 5 spd that has been very good off-road indeed. Of all the vehicles I've ever owned including brit sedans/Minis/Triumphs/ Healeys plus 13 Volvos, Ford Falcons, F250s, Mustangs; Willys jeeps, Nissans, VWs..... this Disco clutch is by far the best. The engagement is very linear and unbelievably smooth - a wonderful unit.

The only issue I have with the 5 spd set up does not involve the clutch: firstly the ZF transmission synchros are truly truck design requiring slow careful gear-changes especially when it's 37 below outside. I recommend on those really cold mornings to let the gearbox warm up for a few minutes before driving off. Second point is the gear meshing sounds coming from the transmission when you are creeping over obstacles - you can hear the gears working back and forth as the torque increases and then decreases. This is not a problem, but to anyone from the autobox crowd who is listening, this sounds odd (I have been asked multiple times if there is something wrong)

As mentioned by jhmover, don't ride the clutch and you should be very happy. If you treat the clutch properly and are not pulling people out of the ditch too much or teaching too many kids how to drive, I would expect the clutch to last 75-100k miles of mixed highway/off-road and city errand driving.

One more point: remember to change the Dot 4 brake fluid in the clutch hydraulic system along with the brake system fluid every 4 years or so. (there is a trick to bleeding the clutch system after the fluid change)

I love to wheel with my 5 spd. I have a 94 disco 1. As long as you are confident with the clutch and know how to drive it you will do fine. I like it because i feel like i have more control.

LOL!

I have had mine for almost 4 years now. I had 67k when I bought it. (original clutch I think) I now have 122k. Still on the same clutch. I have taken moderate trails with this, and absolutley love it. I can see where an auto transmission would be benificial, but like others have said, its all in how you work the clutch! Don't ride it, or you will burn it up. I also pull trailers with mine, usually @1200lbs or more worth of weight. Don't drive it like you stole it either, good way to tear up your transmission. If you do get a 5-speed, put redline mtl inside! Hope this helps!

Yup go with that completely! Although I have a defender I still have a 5 speed manual (LT77) and transferbox (LT230) and love the choice and control the manual boxes give you. Now although the LT77 isn't quite as good as the R380 5 speed (found in 300TDis and TD5s) it is still a stonking gearbox. Coupled with the 200TDi you can stick it in 1st low difflock and just climb/crawl up and over things on tickover.

I have heard that people prefer the auto boxes on V8s though because of the smoothness of the power delivery.

I prefer the choice of what gear to be in and the changing of gears too, like to actually drive rather than be driven!
