Default Window, Seats, Leaks, Hello

Hey folks... good to be here. I spend lots of time on a VW forum taking care of my two air cooled buses.. but I'm helping my wife out and dealing with some problems she's having with her 97 Disco. I'm taking it to the mechanic tomorrow.. (non dealership) to have a look see after I attempted to fix the problem.

#1 Seats won't move.. For a while they wouldn't budge at all.. (power front driver and passenger) but after doing some research on here... I tried cleaning the switches and now the driver's seat moves forward and aft... but only if the driver's door is open. Passenger still won't move. Checked the fuses under the seats and appear to be OK.. any thoughts?

#2 Once again we're having power window problems. It would seem this is a weak link on our model having replaced two other regulators? before on rear windows. Now driver's side makes a heck of a clank when you're rolling it up and it's almost to the top. Might be off track a bit..?

#3 There seem to be some minor leaks .. dripping ATF and Power Steering fluid. I haven't had a chance to peek in there yet.

Anyway, I'll keep you posted on what he says tomorrow.

By the way I'm in Portland, Oregon.

Thanks everyone!!!!

Default Update...

Still in the shop.. but we told the guy we weren't in a hurry. So far, he's fixed the window, we also got new brakes since were down to 15 percent. But he's still working on the seats. Says there is power to the switches. But I've noticed the cigarette lighter, clock, and seats all don't work.

Hey dude, welcome to the forum! As far as the leaking power steering fluid...try the lucas power steering stop leak. It's pretty thick stuff and will slow/stop the leak if it's not too major.

But don't stress out about the leaks...it's a rover...it's gonna leak. If it stops leaking...it's empty.

There is a guy over on www.lrrforums.com who is parting out a 96 Disco (I think that's the year). Maybe you can get some parts on the cheap from him.

Default Resolution

I wanted to get back to you on the resolution to my wife's Land Rover problems.

We picked it up on Saturday.. a week and a half after bringing it in.. (but we told the mechanic we were in no hurry).

1. Front window was making a big clanking sound when you moved it up.

Mechanic said nylon roller was shattered. Said it was too bad LR didn't sell just the roller because he could have fixed it cheaper.. than having to buy the whole kit... $170.

2. Seats didn't move. (The electrical problems took him the longest.) Finally found some wires frayed underneath the seats.. cleaned up connections.. replaced some fuses (I couldn't find damaged ones when I looked).

Now clock works bright, seats move with door closed, and cigarette lighter works again.

3. Rear view mirror was cloudy. Found replacement mirror from wrecking yard with courtesy lights (a bonus). Installed new (used) mirror. Parts $150.

4. Front brakes were at 15 percent so he replaced pads, free'd up calipers and resurfaced rotors.

5. Installed back taillight guard that broke off earlier by using a new screw he put in from inside/out.. and used a good glue to keep rubber side rubber strip mounted. (It used to slip off all the time, even new ones we bought.)

6. Checked out leaks.. said power steering was worst of them... thought the only way to really fix it was new steering box.. which is very expensive. Instead, he put conditioner in there and says he hopes that will stop it. Says it was really weird to find this in a car with only 50K miles.

That's it I think.

Total bill: $1,070. Parts were around $575, labor was the rest. We were really happy with the job and all his fixes were first rate, not patch jobs.

Anybody have a clue what this would have cost at the dealer?

Thanks for all the help.. now I'm going to read up on how to do an oil change in this rig!!!

It runs nice now and was a nice Mother's Day present for my wife.

Glad you got everything repaired. Just wanted to let you know that Rover rotors are not made to b resurfaced and if done will usually be down to their minimum thickness and prone to warping. Just a little information for in the future. Rover makes a very thin rotor out of a very soft alloy, they usually don't turn out well.
Enjoy your truck and send us a picture.
