The Tachometer operates off of your alternator and guages RPM via output.

Causes offluctuation could be:

1). Loose Connection. Clean and tighten on rear of alternator.
2). Loose or improperly routed Serpentine Belt. Check for tension and routing. A routing diagram is located on www.atlanticbritish.com under Tech Tips.
3). Failing Alternator. Check output, should be 14 I believe. The Tach acts as a sort of "canary in the mine" for the alternator.

This is based on the assumption that you have a Disco.

Others may have more to add, best of luck on a fix.

Sounds like your VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) is going out. You can get one at Atlantic British for $99 plus shipping and it takes about 10 minutes to swap out. The greatest difficulty is getting to the two allen screws that mount it to the back of the transmission as it's wedged between the transfer case and the transmission. Easy fix though with the right tools

Hope this helps.

I second what 9Dawgs is saying....VSS. Call Nathan at Discount Rovers for the best price. www.discountbritishparts.com If it's not on his site, just call him.
