Default Yet another request for Disco Help!

Hi there

First you should know that I am not automobile-mechanically inclined - at all. I have a 1997 (sorta) Discovery. According to the VIN there was a change sometime in 1997 and my fuel system is "advanced evap" or something like that. Does that mean that the system is not compatible with previous models? Before I bought my beauty, the engine was replaced with a 1995. Possibly this may account for my problem, and even be a source of problems yet to come.

Problem: When starting, sometimes it would not catch until third or fourth try. Gradually it took more and more tries. Now it catches for a nanosecond, then stops. Could this possibly be something simple like a clogged fuel filter? There does not seem to be any pressure in the fuel line. If I have to replace the fuel pump, can I use the pump from the 1995 vehicle (still available for parts)? Makes sense that it would be the right one for the 1995 engine. Also, is the present pump (1997) acting up because of having to work with the 1995 engine?

I checked earlier forum questions: it is not the fuse, and pushing the fuel cutoff switch did not help.

I want to download the correct workshop manual – but which one?

Also: will sensors for both models be the same? I need an antilock one for sure.

I bought (but have not yet used) an Innova OBD2 – 1003 Code Reader. It is supposed to work – will it?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I am in BC and not close to any major centres. I do have someone who will be doing the work but my job is to do the research. Also, money is very tight at the moment and a $750 new pump is not a comfortable expense at the moment.

Thanks for reading. I am so looking forward to going out and using this great creation for what it was meant to do.

a 95 is differnt, not because of EVAP system, but the internals. I have never tried/seen a 95 3.9 installed in a GEMS car like yours.

No.

Makes sense If it cranks, then stops, and fuel pressure goes away, I would look at leaking fuel injectors..Easy to test.[/quote]

Its Slightly different. But, it can be rebuild easily for cheap parts avalible at any auto parts store.

Sensors for ABS are the same on all Disco Series one. So yes.

Dealers are going to be just as good as any indi shop at this vintage. Dealers cannot even get these parts from Rover, and most have so much turn around that its possible the techs havent even seen one of this vintage.

Elemental

Thanks for replying so quickly - gives me a place to start. Doesn't sound like a great situation but at least now I know what I am facing.
