Question Importing a Defender from the UK

Hey,

I'm looking to import a Land Rover Defender 90 from the Uk but I am not sure if it is a good idea. I'm looking at 2010-2016 with very low milage. Will it be way more expensive for maintenance because they are not common here? with parts and how reliable are they? If you have any comments or help that would be much appreciated! I've never had one so don't know much about them.

Thanks!

2010-2016 would be very illegal here so parts would be the least of your worries. 25 years old minimum to bring one over.

1972 MGB
2006 Bonatti Grey LR3 Proud Rhino Bumper, Baja Rack and TF underbody skid plates almost 33's lol
2007 Chawton White LR3 Proud Rhino lift rods
1983 Trident Green 110, TerraFirma suspension, and bumpers
1991 Range Rover Classic Hunter Eastnor Green

They are not a particularly well designed vehicle. They are one of those that you have to love them to drive them, otherwise you would not put up with one. They are probably a bit more reliable than other Land Rover products due to them having less electronics.

Not many choices. You're looking at $80K for an OK NAS D90 and will have a tough time finding one that doesn't need some real work done to it.

I would be afraid of ANY grey-market D90. For some reason this truck is all over the CBP's radar. They are going after anything that's 25+ and gives them any hint at being suspicious. Vehicle too clean? Doctored serial number. Anything out of order or mildly interest-drawing? Seized vehicle. And you're guilty until proven innocent.

To be honest, you're not missing anything. They are about as sophisticated as an early 70's CJ5. I bought a new one--- it was too cool not to. Spent more time at the dealer's service department than in my garage. When I had it, it was like dating a virgin supermodel. Awesome looking but nothing all that pleasant about the experience.

Buy a US-spec Gelandewagen. It's a much, much, much better truck.

Yeah- read the last two articles and then tell me you still want to import one.

Can you imagine dealing with customs agents on something like this? Plus, the're looking to the wonderful people at Rover America for info, and they have a serious hard-on for these grey market trucks- God only knows why.

I say patience. We'll likely see the next-gen Defender at either Frankfurt or Geneva, and from a capability standpoint it may be more capable even than the new Discovery. Will probably also be more reliable....
