Exclamation First service interval quoted $1321 <!>

So... my wife's 2018 Discovery (HSE TD6) just hit 5k miles and the "Service Required" warning light came on. The service manual indicates an interval of 15k miles or 12 months, so I guess that the dealership took possession 12 months ago which turned out to be correct. Annoying that it was due early, but whatever. When I asked how much the service would cost, I was quoted $1321 for a "regular" service, or $1417 for "premium", which included a rinse of the crank case with detergents. When I asked what was included (beyond lube/oil/filter) it was a bunch of incidental stuff like checking the battery terminals for corrosion, cabin air filter replacement (which probably isn't necessary at only 5k miles), road test, etc. Maybe I'm getting cheap in my old age, but this just feels like highway robbery. For my past Rovers (I had an '02 Freelander and an '02 Disco) the first service interval was always free.

Advice? Am I just screwed? I can't fathom paying $1400+ after tax for a glorified oil change.

My advice is stay away from the dealer.
Find a reputable independent that can carry out your services.
If it’s not even due by mileage then reset the maintenance indicator and carry on (assuming you are doing basic fluid level checks and tire maintenance.

I'd get a written list of every item that is included and the cost. Then I'd do all those inspections myself and write them in a log book. There's no requirement that you do all those things. Your owner's manual maintenance supplement should t have a list of required service items and schedule. Those are the only items you need to follow to maintain your warranty and you can do them yourself and document it/save the parts receipts. All that other fluff is a bunch of crap.
