2003 Disco 2nd Row Interior Light Won't Turn Off

Hi All,

I recently took the headliner out of my 2003 Discovery in order to access the rear sunroof, which had been leaking like a waterfall. I managed to fix the leak by removing the old seal between the outer piece and the top of the truck and replacing it with a silicone bead. However, when I put the headliner back in and reassembled everything, I found that, after plugging my battery back in, the 2nd row interior light will not turn off.

I find this particularly interesting because, there were several times during the course of this project where I had the doors open and the battery still plugged in, and even with the doors open and thus a reason for the light to be on, it turned off by itself after what seemed to be about ten minutes. Add yet, now, in addition to the light being on when all of the doors are closed, whatever timer/failsafe that was causing it to cut out after so many minutes of continuous use is no longer kicking in, as well.

I come here humbly asking for help in resolving this issue that goes beyond my short-term fix of simply removing the lightbulb from the malfunctioning unit. If any of you have experienced this issue, or have even an inkling of an idea as to how one might go about fixing it, please don't hesitate to sound off below.

Thank you all in advance for your time and guidance.

Unfortunately I cannot answer your question but I can share in your pain.

After my most recent R&R of my headliner, the second row dome light will NOT turn on manually. it turns on when the doors open, but remains off when i kick the switch on.
it should be, from side to side: ALWAYS ON/OPEN DOOR/OFF
but mine is now: OFF/OPEN DOOR/OFF

i assumed it was a grounding problem of some sort, as my understanding is such (please correct me if i'm wrong):
light bulb has +12V at all times
switch to on supplies -12V
switch from door supplies -12V

most cars do it this way as a precaution, so that if the trigger gets shorted to the chassis, it's shorting ground to ground not +12V to ground resulting in sparks, fuse blows, and eventual discharge of the battery

i would venture to say that only door trigger is on a shutdown timer, so if you're dealing with a forever-on light, either the ON switch is shorted to ground, or there's a fault with the timer (less likely in my head).

i hope that helps!

You know you answered to a man who had only one post 3 years ago dont you?

Anyway, the courtesy lights have theyr function well described in the owner's handbook and it's good to know that. They are all in parallel and as you said +12V permannent and triggered on the earth path through the switch or from the BCU if a door is opened. If any door remains opened the lights will go out after 10 minutes and they will not come on again automatically unless the ignition was turned on to reset the timer, also they go out in 15 seconds after all the doors were closed... that's how everything was set from factory

then the earth connected to the switch or the switch itself is the problem.
