Diesel conversion question...

Earlier this year my friends '95 was showing signs of a blown head gasket. I started doing research on a diesel swap and noticed that the cost of the engine itself is more than the disco is worth. It just so happens that early this year I moved from NY to Nicaragua. The reason I bring this up is there is a lot of Land Rover diesels down here and parts. I know shipping from here is considerably cheaper than that from Britain or overseas. So my questions are:Is there really a lot of interest in these? What engines are the most desirable? What is needed to be included in the engine? And most importantly, what are people wanting to pay for these?
I'm really just fishing for information to see if it's worth it for me and anyone who wants a diesel. I don't want to have money tied up in engines that are just sitting.
Also, I still have to make sure of what is included with exporting and importing into the states, but like I said I think it can be done at a better price.

Call the DOT and USEPA and ask them about importing diesels into the US.

Hint, there has never been a turbo diesel Rover engine that was legal to import into the US.

USEPA form 3520-1 should scare you.

So has no one done this before? Does anyone know how the other companies do this? I think it would be great for people to get their hands on the engines without having to take out a loan. Any thoughts?

In some countries "other" motors were fitted to rovers e.g. Australian 110's from 1984ish through to 1992 had a 3.9 Isuzu motor out of a 3tonne NPR truck this was a "factory fit" (locally assembled). South Africa had a similar variant with a slightly different motor might be worth looking into what variation of the motors are available to you before getting in too deep they might not be rover motors at all.

You can import the engine and the whole vehicle! Just can't title it without a lot of work! I have inquired about importing rovers and parts! My Father has bought me a 97 Disco TDI 5Spd in England for 500 pounds and it drives, just failed MOT because of rust! I don't need the body! Also if you can wait for the shipping company to have half a container empty, it will cost $1000 to ship it over if you can wait that is! Now I am torn between the Isuzu NPR swap and the TDI! Much more torque in the NPR! But don't state such broad statements like that! Yes there hasn't been a turbo diesel sold in a new rover vehicle in the states, but you can import them! Also you can register a 1995 and later Rover over here as it meets US EPA regs! Have a friend that imported a 110 with shipping, taxes and getting registered including the price of the rover was $9800. The 110 was $5500 so that gives you an idea! Plus that form is easy try getting a green card!

I have already imported one vehicle, 1964 Daimler 2.5l saloon, which I still have! I about to import the 97 as stated! I am not saying it is easy there is alot of paperwork to fill out, and have an attorney check it out also! But to say flat out that it can't be done is wrong! I don't rely on what I have read just relying on my own experience! I am certainly not saying that you don't know what you are talking about but try to help the man, don't scare him! How do you think any of these English vehicles get over here? There is a 2 door 110 TDI here in Clarksville, tn That was imported!

Anything can be done and I'll point out that anything can be impounded and crushed with the owner receiving a hefty fine along with it.

Having seen vehicles that are similar models being brought in that are newer than 25 years I know for a fact your missing a lot of changes that must be done before it's brought it. Like bringing it into compliance with US regulations. some do slid by but there are huge pitfalls to doing it.

If operating in the extreme dark gray to black floats your boat by all means do it, but don't advise others to do what is most likely illegal.

Oh and just so you know I have driven TDI Rovers here in the US and have seen more than a few 110's rolling around, so yes I know it can be brought in. Paperwork doesn't scare me either I'm a government employee, my whole day is paperwork...

I wonder if you could "build" a Land Rover with a diesel engine in the US under the kit car/home built/hot rod etc laws? I realize that each state seems to have its own laws about this but I have seen all kinds of wacky concoctions in the custom/Hot Rod world.
