Ignition problems with 2006 Range Rover Sport HSE

I own a 2006 Range Rover SPort HSE and have experienced recent issues with my car not starting. Initially this occurred when i turned the key and the engine did not start. I noticed that the AC, radio and other dash light indicators did come on. The car started on a second turn of the key. This same pattern continued for a couple of weeks. I took to a reputable Range Rover specialist who told me it definitely was not a battery issue but that he could not diagnose or repair the problem without replicating the problem I was having. This was somewhat of a surprising answer to me, but he continued by saying that he didn't want to charge me for installation of a new starter if that was not the issue.

Over the last couple of weeks the problem seemed to vanish but over the last 2 days, the issue has reappeared and is now taking 3, 4, 5 and sometimes more attempts to start the car before the engine actually comes on. I have noticed a slight "tic" when i turn the key and as before, the AC, radio and dash light indicators all power on although the engine does not.

Please let me know your recommendations and what you suggest I do. I feel it is a matter of time before I get stranded.

Same problem

I am having the EXACT same problem you are. I even left my 06 Sport with the dealership for 10 days. They could not replicate the problem.

The problem went away for a few weeks, but just resurfaced again this morning. Interestingly enough, about 5/6 of the time, I can get it started with jumper cables. This might just be pure coincidence as the battery is just fine. I have no clue.

My dealership is stumped as well. Their best guess suggestion is to replace the starter, but no guarantee that this is the solution. I don't see any other choice for me at this point. I cannot continue to be intermittently stranded.

Making the situation worse, the parts manager says these starters are on "critical backorder" and he has no idea if it will take weeks or months to receive one.

Is this happening to others?!?!? There are at least two of us now.

Hi there,
Im having the same problem, and let me tell you it gets worse. Initially I was getting warning messages on the range rover sport constantly, transmission fault, special programs off, hdc fault, so many of them now, I cannot even remember. Then I started getting the problem with the ignition. I have had EVERYTHING replaced. battery, transmission, alternator, etc etc etc. Initially the dealer I purchased the vehicle from was covering these repairs, now he is saying the warranty is up, so its my problem, which infuriates me, as I have basically had these problems since week one. Just so you are aware, now the vehicle does not start up, most cold mornings. It will not work on jump leads, unless from another range rover, or similar powerful vehicle, or from a self contained battery charger. So you will definitely be stranded. I am now having to fork out for a tow truck each time this problem occurs. I cant get it started at all. There is a message on the radio screen, saying low power mode. I have had almost every expert in ireland look at this for me. No one has a notion what is wrong or how to fix it. do we not have some sort of comeback, even with Land rover. I feel like we have been stiffed with faulty vehicles. Is there anyone out there who can advise me on this. I was also told, that the subwoofer on the radio could be running the battery down. Or that It could be my hands free kit in the vehicle, or the fact that I got 22inch rims put on. All these sound like ridiculous reasons for a vehicle to act up like this. I have sent it in for repairs diagnostics etc, 20 times in the last 6-7 months, and now im stuck with this. Wish someone would help me, this is upsetting me, bankrupting me, and nearly losing me my job, as Im a rep, and there is a recession on, no one is safe. Please can someone help me. I have no where else to turn at this stage.

I am also having the exact same problem with 06 RRS. The battery seems fine but the engine did not start. only slight"tic" when i turn the key. Call AAA yesterday and get it started with jumper cable but the AAA guy said this is not battery prob. Today, the engine not start again. Do i need to tow to dealers? please advise.

Check the battery terminals. I have had the same problem and found that the terminals are not getting a good connection.

Did anyone get any nearer a solution with this problem as its also affecting my 2006 RRsport.
Ive been having the problem for a month now and its gone from taking a few turns of the key to get it started to it just not starting for over 24 hours and then for no reason it will just start!
Its been in and out of a Land Rover specialist for the past month now and they have changed the battery, starter motor, alternater, ignition module and ignition barrel but still every time I get the car back after half a day the problem starts again.

Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

ignition switch?

I have an older RR, but from what your describing and what you've already tried I would suggest a new ignition switch. Like I said my RR is a 91 so I'm not familiar with the ignition systems on the newer ones but it could be bad wiring on the column or something related to the switch itself. Just my 2 cents

I have fixed alot of these with that problem. I have found a fair amount of them have a bad ground on the passenger motor mount. Land Rover sometimes didn't drill the hole deep enough and it seems like the bolt is tight but it has just bottomed out in the threads. If that ground is good then depending on the weather you might have water dripping into your CJB(central junction block). Passenger kick panel area. There is a problem with the mouldings on the outside of the A pillars leaking water through the clip holes. There is a updated kit to reseal those mouldings. If you need the part number I can supply it. If that all looks good you probably have a bad ignition switch.

Problem resolved?

Did you ever find out what was causing your issue?

I am also interested in if this issue was resolved or not as I am experiencing the same symptoms on my 06 RR.

I'm having the same problem with my 06 RRS. I've had the vehicle in 3 times to assess the issue. They have never been able to replicate the issue, and have found no error codes. They did, on the last occasion, check the battery ground in the wheel well, which was apparently corroded. They cleaned it and I was issue-free for about a month. The problem has just recurred and the rover is back in the shop. The technician connected a light to the starter motor to assess it, and it fired perfectly 24 straight times. I know I'll get the car back and the problem will still be there. If anybody has resolved this issue, let me know. The technician has recommended replacing the starter motor and solenoid. Not sure how to proceed.

Ignition Problem

Just to follow up; Changed the battery, and the problem has not recurred. It has been >2 months problem-free.

03 RR same issue

I've had the same issue with my 03 RR randomly not starting and getting the "tic" noise. Mine seems to eventually start sometimes taking a dozen attempts. One thing that seems to have helped this happen far less often is that I noticed my RR wasn't always switching from highway mode back to regular (air suspension) after driving on the highway for quite a while then turning the truck off too quickly before it's had time to switch back. Could just be superstitious but if I wait or actually turn the knob to make it go back to normal mode, the problem doesn't seem to occur nearly as often. Certainly wouldn't hurt to try.

06 rr hse

Hello everyone,

Well I am new here and am also having this intermitant ignition problem on 06 RR HSE. Turn the key and a click, sounds like a bad ground connection? RR dealer said it could be bad starter motor but didn't know for sure. Been trying for two days to remove top bolt on starter can't get it out, has anyone here changed the starter on theirs if so, any hints to help me,please. What size is the bolt and best way to do it? I checked all the wire leads removed and cleaned the ones on starter and on the batt. Seems to start fine now but for how long!!? Please email me [email protected]
