Flashing "M" & "S" Lights.

Having searched this forum and others it seems that people have solved the problem in one of three ways. Replacing the battery, the Gear Selector Switch, or Crank Shaft Sensor. Nobody, to my knowledge, has had to replace more than one of these. The starter motor and fuel pump have also been mentioned but I've not heard of anyone replacing these.

Has anyone any further information that my be of help? Has anyone the part numbers for the GSS and/or the CSS? Can anyone recommend the best place to acquire them? The vehicle details are: Discovery, Aug 2002, TD5 Auto.

Other info:
I've had my TD5 since January this year and got rid of the "Three Amigos" via a local garage but shortly after the "M" & "S" lights appeared. Since then they have been off and on at ever more frequent intervals. The local garage couldn't decide on what to do. I got the battery checked by specialist auto battery firm and the passed it with flying colours. I then took it to an independent Landy garage who advertise a "SOPHISTICATED COMPUTER" and charged me £20 to tell be it could be "anything electrical" but thought it may be the starter motor. Went to the main dealer who agreed with the diagnosis (anything!) so I didnít bother paying for a further diagnosis there!

The most common issue causing this is a dirty or loose battery cable or a tired battery under 13.6 volts.
Do you have a check engine light on, is it driving in limp mode, 3rd gear?

The first step is the batt but you have covered that. with D2 if you have under 12v on start up they will fault the auto(m&s). If your fault isnt at start up then i would be looking at replacing the XYZ switch. it is on the side of the gear box where the selector comes out. Start there and it should end there. Good luck

If your voltage is any where in the 12 volt range, you are too low, the standard is 13.6 to 14.4 volts

Thank you for your help. I am new to this Forum because I just purchased a used 2002 Discovery II. We had the flashing m and s (and D) problem and after taking the advice given on this site, ie replace battery, I am happy to report that the flashing lights have stopped. Unfortunately we drove in 3rd gear all the way home from our ski trip because no shop was open on a Sunday.

"toecee" that is correct, I had the same problem and where is what happened. I was driving about 25 mi/hr and my car stopped suddenly. i heard a clunk and the "M" & "S" and "D" letter was flashing and it would not turn on again. later I came back and the car started with no problems. having no codes, from that I got eight codes here they are (P0307,P0374,P1300,P0308,P0304,P1884,P0335,P0102), I freaked out, I have never had these many codes. I on my way to check the battery, it died on me again. I paid 45dlls for a diagnostic at the corner garage and they said it would be 800dlls to replace the ignition coils that where overheating and turning off the car when the engine got hot. I would let my car sit in my driveway and it would turn off after may be 10 minutes at which point only gave me two codes (P0374 and P01884). I checked the battery terminals which were corroded and loose, fixed that cleaned my Mass air flow sensor, tested battery and alternator, all good, after reading this site, I changed the Crank shaft sensor and the problem got fixed. when the sensor came out, it was nasty, I went for a drive no lights and the fan kicked in for the first time and it was a great feeling. what was best that it was relatively simple to fix and I did not have to pay that crack head mechanic 800 dlls, he thought it was the ignition coils which I actually replaced my self and I could guarantee it was not.

Look for water ingress to the cable connectors adjacent to the transmission.

Was the truck converted from air springs to coils in the rear? Doing that without disabling the air springs in the BCU can result in a phantom battery drain.

'99 DII, STI wires, Champion 7070s, '04 CDL & SLABS, Garvin WILDERNESS rack, painted headliner, air springs victim, headgaskets at 109,000, plus victim of XYZ (twice) and many other ridiculous DII failures. Option B AMIGO FREE since February 2011.

Runs like a top; now if I could just afford the gas! December 2014 update - Wait, I can afford the gas! Drill baby, drill!!!
