Programming Engine ECU, How Long?

So, I was told by land rover that programming my new ECU will take 1-2hrs. DiscoMike says it will take about 15min(brain dead and hung over, lol), and I have to say I strongly agree with him simply because you are flashing a vin# and security code to the EEPROM. I don't know about you guys, but I have built and tested about 10,000 electrical boards that do various things and it took only a few minutes to flash on the software. Most of that time was prep work. Why would they say it takes 1-2hrs, besides them being greedy.

The software I was flashing on was smaller then what the ECU contains, but I would be willing to bet the engine ECU carries no more then 5MB of space. I was working with 512KB chips.

I want to call the dealer on their bs, so I think I will request to come watch, I have been on the shop floor many times before, but I am sure they will give me some shit about how I cant be in there.

Have you ever had this done? How long did it take? How long do you think it takes?

Oh man, I am having way to much fun now!

I called the other dealer, there are 2 in the valley, they said they would install the new engine ecu, provided by me, and program it, said it would take about 30min, cost about $100.

Many calls to the other place, they said it is store policy that they cant install parts provided by me. They said it will take them 1-2hrs to ONLY program it.

VERY INTERESTING! Should have gone to the other one

and wouldnt you know, called a local shop that specializes in land rovers, the guy laughed at me when I said I needed a new ecm, he said he has seen them submerged in water, dried off and put back in and they work. He didn't know if he could program them, is that a dealer only thing? If he can he is going to make the effort and go to the dealer lot where its parked and program it.. LOL

follow up questions

CademiaX, what was the problem you were having with your disco causing you to replace the ECU? I've been having having problems with the car stalling, I've replaced everything I can think of outside of the ECU and I've had one place tell me that needs to be replaced. Where did you end up having it done? did it fix the problem?

I'm reading a lot on the land rover forum and maybe someone could give me some in put. I have an 03 freelander 2.5l that had a bad head gasket. Replaced head gasket set and head bolts doing proper tightening sequence. While having apart I replaced the fuel injectors and rail also replaced all coil packs and irridium spark plugs with land rover parts. As well replaced cam belts and timing belts and aligning using alignment tool kit to proper timing marks. Put back together and won't start or attempt to ...just cranks over. Have great spark and fuel pressure. Now it ran before replacing head gasket but smoked cloudy white. Also heads were done at machain shop. Does anyone know what could be issue of not starting...is this the ecm and needing to be programmed? Thanks everyone

Start a new thread in the appropriate model section.

And, no, it's not the ECU.

You can't use a ''software''... you need a dedicated Land Rover diagnostic tool unlocked for Discovery 2 to force the ECU to learn the immobiliser's security code from the BCU otherwise the engine will not run at all

if you think my english is peculiar it means you didnt hear my japanese

ALL MY ADVICES ARE BASED ON MY OWN KNOWLEDGE AND MY WAY OF UNDERSTANDING THE DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION OF SYSTEMS... I'M NOT A LAND ROVER TRAINED SPECIALIST JUST AN ADDICTED ENTHUSIAST.

If you plan to keep your truck, getting a diagnostic tool is of great value. I went with iLand myself and love it.
