Rear O2 sensor code

Ok so I got a P161 code for 02 sensor L2 Rear signal below minimum. I'm assuming signal below minimum means too lean? Not sure.

I replaced the rear Bosch O2 with a rear Walker O2. The problem seems to have gone away now.

Any problems running 3 Boschs and 1 Walker on the rear?

Maybe no problems but I always swap O2 sensors in same pairs of NTK sensors.

There should be no problem mixing Walker and Bosch sensors as you have done.

But I will point out that the P0161 descriptions in the RAVE are "O2 sensor heater circuit malfunction (bank 2, sensor 2)" and "Rear sensor heater RH bank - short/open circuit." There is no reference to "signal below minimum" as you state, and it has nothing to do with the engine running lean.

Remember, the sole purpose of the rear, position 2, downstream O2 sensors is to monitor catalytic converter effectiveness. Ideally the voltage reading should remain very close to 450 mV, fluctuating more slowly and over a more narrow range than the upstream sensors.

I don't see an UltraGauge or something similar in your long list of modifications. Are you able to monitor O2 sensor voltages and other data while driving?

'99 DII, STI wires, Champion 7070s, '04 CDL & SLABS, Garvin WILDERNESS rack, painted headliner, air springs victim, headgaskets at 109,000, plus victim of XYZ (twice) and many other ridiculous DII failures. Option B AMIGO FREE since February 2011.

I removed the cats and installed O2 spacers. I got the car registered in FL to pass emissions and get that badass vvrooom noise. Everything has been working fine until now.

I have an Ultraguage and a Nanocom. The UG is for the temps. All I know how to do with the Nancom is clear faults.

I swapped in a Bosch O2 sensor and am now getting a different O2 code for the same thing. Rear O2 Pipe #2 . And of course it immediately has to mess up how the engine runs and Hog an insane amount of gas.

If I could remove the entire emissions monitoring system I would.

Then you've spent money in vain for a very evolved diagnostic tool which is wasted... In Motronic - Inputs - O2 you can read live data of them, it's also explained in the user guide how the readings should be OK ... and from all the other sensors in the same section... just dont misunderstand things

I don't want to waste time reading instruction manuals. It should be simple and easy to use like Windows. If I knew I needed a 6 month course to learn it I would never have bought it.

I removed the cats and resonator, installed a Flowmaster muffler, and installed 4 O2 spacers:

These are suppose to keep your CEL off for O2 codes. It ran great for a while. Now I'm getting over revving errors, Drive Train Errors, and downstream O2 sensor errors.

I have way, way more mods. Easily double the list. The blue collar geniuses who made this website can't make a signature line longer than 700 characters.

Then maybe you watched other scanner cos nanocom shows 6 values/page for each position(what you see for upstream is shown for downstream too on a next page while there are 6 pages with various readings)

I didnt think that 6 months are needed to read and understand 18 pages. IMO it's simple and easy to use for anybody with an IQ which has 3 digits but how would you know what readings to expect if you dont read the descriptions or the workshop manual where they explain how O2 readings should look if everything is OK or what's wrong if the readings are out ?

I do not understand the technical data on the screens. A Nanocom is something for an experienced mechanic that can look at these numbers, compare and contrast to diagnose, and knows what should be what. I am nowhere near this level. Since I am not a mechanic I have no foundation for advanced data analysis.


Thank you for your response but I got impatient and purchased 2 new Bosch O2 sensors. I am putting them on right now. If those don't work I will buy 2 more new sensors for the front and install a new MAF.

Well .. you're the guy who loves electronics right?

You should get one. It's awesome. Check your rear view mirror for piggies.. then press the button. Pass the camera and give it the finger. Once your safe. Press button again. It's funny.

The scanner is awesome. You can easedrop on the police. When you see one behind you .. listen to them run your plates on the road lol. (if they don't have a scanner and just be sure to turn it of if they pull you over). You can also show up near a live scene ... and grab the popcporn.

Also if you get front-rear laser jammers... it's the ultimate protection .. in some places you know it's safe to speed. And they are just lazy hiding at the bottom of bridges or behind road signs where the speed limit drops. When the cop shoots his laser gun... the jammers block his gun, allowing you time to slow down. It's 100% legal. Then you flick the jammers off and let him read your speed. It's allot of fun. I laugh my ass off every time. One time ... I forget to turn it off and jammed to gun .. the cop turned around and looked t me then looked at his gun lol. Another time I was going maybe 10 over ... I got shot in the rear (jammers and v1 alerted) jammed his gun driving away laughing my ass off... he was shooting over and over again trying to aquirre my speed .. lol .. if you get lasered in the rear (rare) it's a 100% perfect jam every time. There is nothing they can do.

Same thing with the advanced RD's like V1 and Uniden. The cops radar travels down the road ...or bounces of metal signs and such around curves. It's awesome. I have 100+ saves easy. Zero speeding tickets since 1999.

It's a great add on, perfectly legal and lots of fun. You should think about it.

Replaced both rear O2 sensors with Bosch O2 sensors and packed them both with Dielectric grease (also greased the transmission/transfer case temperature sensor with Dielectric grease because the red gear icon keeps coming up on the dash).

The Ultragauge can clear engine management faults. If that's the only thing you're using the Nanocom to do you may as well just send it to me!
