Range Rover Classic V8 3.9EFI Hotwire engine

Range Rover Classic V8 3.9EFI Hotwire engine

When starting the engine it has to crank a long time before firing up, doesn’t matter if engine is hot or cold, it will always start and it runs well, no idle issues, no stall issues.
I am tearing my hair out trying to find the fault.
Any suggestions as to what would cause this?

Back ground
NEW Genuine Lucas distributor cap and rotor arm.
NEW NGK BPR6ES spark plugs.
NEW Magencour leads.
NEW Distributor about 4000miles
ECU remapped by Mark Adams
Rovergauge diagnostic system plugged in and no fault codes shown up on the laptop.

When I had a long crank issue it turned out to be a fuel pressure issue. New pump and filter put everything right.

1972 MGB

At first thought I was thinking timing
But looks like all new

Army probably right about fuel pump and filter
You might also check the vacuum hose
At the fuel pressure regulator
And what year is your Rover

Lads thanks for the feed back

the engine is a 1994 RRC unit, rebuilt and in a Defender 90

googling this side of the pond i have read a load of information regarding the cranking issues.

what surprises me when she started she drives without any issues.

will look at the internal fuel pump and the fuel pressure regulator when i get back home in a few weeks from work

i to am thinking fuel related as when she is stopped it appears the fuel drains back to the tank and there is none in the fuel rail to start her again????.

in fact i cut the fuel hose and placed a non return valve in line, took her for a run but the engine didn't like that idea and i had to remove it after only a few miles and replace the complete hose..................................cheers Ivan

Try turning the ignition on for a few seconds, then off again and then on for a few seconds and then off again before trying to start. This will run the fuel pump and build up fuel pressure. If it starts quicker doing this, then it could be the fuel delivery system.
I have found that the motor like to be spun over quickly to start easily. So you might have a problem with your battery, starter, wiring, etc.
As others have recommended, you should check your timing. The more advanced the timing the easier it will start.

@p76rangie, will try what you suggested about switching on off on off and see

new battery just installed a few months ago, wiring all good to starter and everywhere else.

i plan to check the timing when i get home, as i didn't check this before, but no pinking when i gun her, no lag when i press the pedal, very torquey.......................cheers Ivan
