Took my Rover to a local tuner shop (Dynospot Racing in San Jose)... they usually work on my M3. I called the owner, Dick, and asked him if he would throw on some brake pads on the Rover for me. He said sure, bring it down. They are currently working on some hot rodded Audi S4's and usually have all sorts of crazy turbo charged cars floating around.
So I took it down and asked them if they could throw the tie rod on as well (dang I should have taken a pic of the bent one)... andyhow so the guy starts to take the wheels off and I can see he is having some trouble. I walk over and we are looking at the lug nuts. He was wondering how the little lug nut caps come off.. I had never looked at em, so I had no idea.. well one call later to a Rover shop confirmed they don't come off, they are part of the lug nut.. duh..
Anyhow he gets all the wheels off, changes the pads and the tie rod with no problem. So he ball parks the tie rod to the old ones settings, WAY OFF! Looks like the previous owner had the thing aligned with the bent tie rod.. genius! Getting it aligned next week. My brakes had less than 10% left!
$237 in labor (I brought my own parts), which is great. I have a 1 car garage where I live, and it would have taken me a LONG time to do it a wheel at a time, plus it was done in 2 1/2 hours. Just needs a front end alignment now.
Anyhow, it was WAY cheaper than the Rover shops quoted me to do the job. One shop wanted $400 just to do the tie rod. For a total of $467 I got the tie, rod, pads and labor.. done...
