Gearbox electrical fault

Dear All, New to this forum. Name is Marc

I have a 2011 Discovery 4 HSE. it is throwing up an intermittent gearbox fault problem, which I suspect is an electrical fault. I dont know where to begin in terms of finding it.

sometimes when I put the car into reverse, there is a thump (louder than normal) and gearbox error appears, followed by the message HDC not available. This happens intermittently but it also tends to occur more when the vehicle is facing down an incline. Sometimes at the same time, the reversing camera will not operate. It is as if the computer did not detect the Gearbox being put into reverse and is taken by surpise. This makes me think I may have a poor connection on the gearbox loom, or that a may have a faulty relay somewhere.

I would be really grateful for any ideas as to where to begin looking.

Also, I have another problem, the tow assist does not always detect my caravan being plugged in. the little trailer indicator on the dash always works, but we don't always get the trailer detected message on the screen any ideas on this one would also be greatly appreciated. I am aware of an issue where caravans use LED lights which do not present a sufficient load to the towing electrics, but my van has incandescent bulbs, so it is not that issue.

many thanks in advance for suggestions

Marc

Hi, for the transmission you need to plug in a dedcated LR tester to read the codes stored in the transmission ECU this will point you in the right direction, otherwise it's a guessing game, as about the other issue bad contacts in the trailer socket are quite common, start by checking the pins in the connectors to not be corroded or loosened, give some electric contact spray in them.
