You run a greater risk by powering the vehicle with a jump pack or such.
RTFM and you'll be fine.
IIRC, remove key, close doors, allow vehicle to sit for 30 seconds or so to allow the electronics to go to sleep, then swap the battery. The instructions are even printed near the battery on a yellow sticker.
