I cannot figure out why my driver's front door will not lock. The alarm system does activate upon pressing the fob lock button, but the door will not lock. The door also will not lock using the key.

I pried the door interior off for a look inside. It looks like the actual locking mechanism is sandwiched in between metal door parts. Should I figure out how to dig in that deep or am I looking in the wrong direction?

You are probably looking in the right direction. Your actuator may have died. Sometimes you can still hear them, but the are not actuating enough to lock/unlock the the door. Use the key to lock/unlock. Does it work? If so, it is probably that actuator. If not, it may be the cable.

In fact, the key also fails to lock the door. Now I need to figure out how to take a look at that cable. Thank you!

This locking fail happened to a lot of LR3's from 05-08. Land rover had to fix many of them during warrantee.
