Hi there,

Got an issue with my 2008 LR2. FOB will unlock doors, etc, just fine, but will not insert into its dock/slot.

A few facts:

- Truck battery just died from sitting over the summer in the garage. Fully charged it, but same problem. Battery date of manufacture is 10/2010. I noticed it isnt very good though, once I charge it to 100% and do a few door lock/unlocks, it drops significantly.

- Battery in FOB is new as of December, the replacement has been and still is working great as far as unlocking distance from the vehicle, etc. Never had a problem with the FOB going into the dock prior. The FOB is properly snapped together, etc, not falling apart.

- Nothing seems to be broken in the slot, its almost like the mechanism wont suck the key into place. I vaguely remember the slot having a small LED on one side or both sides of the dock slot, but nothing is lit up. I can insert and pull it out freely, but it wont engage the key and pull it the rest of the way in.

- I dont get any power from anything inside the vehicle, as the key wont insert into its slot for me to even turn on accessories. Therefore, I am unable to see any error messages, cant turn on the radio, etc.

I am leaning towards the battery just being done for. Noticed a few strange things with it last winter as far as battery power goes, such as the radio dimming the lights sometimes during a loud song, etc. Before I drop the cost of a new battery into it, Id would just feel better with a bit more feedback from other owners that they think this could be the culprit.

Ive searched the forums and web over, but I havent come across anything that seems to be my exact problem. It always seems to be non-starting problems, or totally dead key FOB problems, but I havent found anything where it just simply wont accept the key at all.

Any advice is appreciated, thanks everyone!

Update - Fixed!

Just wanted to update in case anyone else has this exact problem and they spend hours Googling for it:

Replaced the battery, and now everything works great. Unfortunately, I had one of my terminal screws strip itself in the process, but its rigged up to stay on so thats an easy fix for another day. Id hate to recommend "try a new car battery" to anyone since they arent cheap, but it seems many Rover problems stem from battery issues, even lower than expected voltages.

Got the classic crunch in the right rear when I accelerate while turning, so, onto dealing with what I assume is the differential problem described in the forums I love these vehicles, but its a labor (and wallet) of love. Im hoping as I put some miles on it since removing it from storage that the differential lubes itself up and that fades away. If not, dont know how much longer Ill keep the car, as the differential replacement seems to be pretty costly. Didnt have any issues with that when I stored it in June. Doh!
