I purchase a used 1995 Range Rover County Classic. On the lower tailgate, I notice two tabs sticking up out of t he top. They are abut a third of the way in from each side. The tops of the tabs look broken off as they have jagged tops.

I got the Rave manual, and looked at many pictures online. I just can't seem to figure out what the hell those tabs are supposed to do. They keep scratching my arms when I reach down into the bed with the tailgate up.

Anyone know what the hell those are for:confused

I've broken mine off twice; and replaced them. I find they are in the way when the gate is closed and you are trying to slide in a sheet of something. Often thought I'd replace them with a round bar or something. Anyone done that??

One tab on my '95 LWB is broken. I haven't had her long, but it took me ages to find out what the hell they were there for. I always just lifted the tailgate by, erm, the tailgate. To me they seem superfluous. I think I'll remove them, or maybe just sand them down to be flush with the door.

They are used to keep your hands clean while closing a dirty tailgate.

With the design of the Classic tailgate, it was a good idea, just not a good design since most of them broke off.

What threw me off about them was the 'HOLD' text printed on them. Hold for what? A coffee? A massage? The answering machine? ;-)

Their main purpose relates to the upper glass tailgate, not the lower section.
The lock for the rear is on the upper tailgate. The tabs stop the lower tailgate being opened while the top part is locked. It also gives some support for the upper tailgate to stop it flapping around.

I never really understood what the "hold" meant. I can only think that it is to remind you to hold the tailgate as you open it and not let it just drop. I do not think that it means to hold those particular tabs.

Aah the mystery is unraveling now ;-)

Not 100% sure but don't they say "LIFT" on the other side. IIRC "HOLD" can be read with the gate closed, so you know where to hold to open the door and "LIFT" can be read with the gate open so you know to lift by the tabs. I'll have to remember to look when I get home to confirm.

Twenty or more years down the pike, most owners today have a much lower expectation of their luxurious Range Rover than the original owners had back in the '80's and '90's. Lift/hold tabs were there, as a poster above mentioned, to allow the owner to hold the tailgate as it opened or lift the tailgate to close it. There's little mystery there.

What I'm more curious about is why Rover dropped the four tabs on the earlier Classic's and went with just the two larger tabs towards the end of the model run. Were the bean counters nixing the two smaller tabs in an effort to increase the miniscule margins Rover was operating with on the Range Rover model?
