My factory CD changer is dead, and I haven't had a tape since 1994. I pulled the factory deck out, and found that the deck is actually a "1 DIN" deck with an oversized faceplate making it appear as a "1.5 DIN" deck. I am looking to install an In-dash DVD unit that will support NAV, but I have been searching for the right unit for weeks, and everything I find is missing at least one feature I require. So in the meanwhile, I just purchased a basic Alpine CD player with MP3/USB support so I can at least have tunes while I continue my search. I ordered an "Install kit" which is supposed to consist of the panel to hide the ugly gap under the deck. My other concern is that the deck seems to be really recessed back in the dash opening. It isn't that big of a deal at the moment since this deck is just temporary, but I dont see a flip out DVD screen being able to flip out without hitting the area above the radio as it sticks past the face of the current deck. I can make whatever is needed custom (I work at a custom car shop), I just figured that this was common enough, that someone would offer a kit to overcome these issues. Any advice, or pics of your installs before I start cutting/fiberglassing?

I have a single din fold out style screen DVD/MP3/CD player and it has no clearance problems at all. In the fully tilt up position it is close but the angle is so extreme it would make any sense to have it like that.

I finally chose a pioneer deck (Not my favorite brand, but no other reputable company offered all of the options I wanted). I will update with my final install.

Are you talking to me? The deck I chose does not have nav., I have a portable window mount Garmin for that. I just want to see install pics to see what the screen clearance is between the screen, and upper dash piece when the screen is up.

Anybody have any pics of a flip up style screen installed in a DII? I just dont see it working unless the deck is spaced out. It seems like it would hit the upper area of the dash trim when open. Depending on how far the screen comes out of the deck of course.

You have no clue how much I love you right now. I bought a disco a couple months ago, had serious water damage from a leaky sunroof. Factory radio didn't work so I opted to take my radio from the truck I was getting away from (97 Ford Expedition with 500k miles) and put it in my disco. I fixed most everything to do with water damage (aside from power mirrors and headlight switch that I had to rig up), and for the past month I have been driving without music, and with my 2 hour daily commute, it's been torture. The harness adapter I have had the power wire coded blue and white, once I hooked it to the blue wire it worked. THANK YOU! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

Lol thanks it helped (harness came like that, but I jumped from main power instead and tada it worked fine). Anyway I got a really loud humming noise from sounstream amp so I had to cut some RCA cables splice them with audio harness(this stereo comes with RCA right out of the head unit, not color coded wires) and eliminate the sounstream amp. But it works now and sounds GOOD.

TY for the help!

Swapping Stereos in 2004 Disco II - Guidance Please!

I was told i needed to purchase an additional amp 59$ and 50$ labor in order to have a stereo installed into my 2004 DiscoII which still has the original factory stereo.

Can someone tell me if swapping out stereos, to one with usb/bluetooth/aux, cd etc is doable w/o purchasing an additional amp? Also, do i need to purchase an install kit?
Thanks so much for the help! Terri

My 2004 SE has what are called ISO A and B connectors, to connect to the stereo. See here.

Connectors for car audio - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There is a third connector for the CD changer control, which I am not using anymore.

Some aftermarket stereos have the same A and B connectors, some do not. My Blaupunkt 420BT does, and plugged straight in, by which I mean I simply unplugged the old connectors and plugged them into the new stereo.

The new stereo is working fine with the old LR amp.

The only adapter I had to buy is a little plate that covers the space below the stereo (the new one being thinner than the old one). If you buy a stereo that doesn't use A and B connectors, you'll need a wiring adapter.

So in answer to your questions : 1) It is possible, yes. 2) Depends what stereo you buy.

Yes, I think the parents love it more! No more "are we there yet?" pleadings from the kids :)

As you can see from the video, we spent the entire day off-roading at the Tillamook State Forest. The kids was entertained throughout the day which made it easier to enjoy the drive.

I recommend the OP get a head unit with the ability to play songs/movies via USB.

Marksf, how do you like blaupunkt? I've never owned one, does that model work with the steering wheel controls? I noticed a couple online that do. Also do you know of any other brands that use that plug style? Thanx

I got the Blaupunkt because it is simple to use, and has a subtle design. I hate the look of most modern stereos with their flashing displays, multitude of mysterious buttons, and terrible interfaces. It also works well. I haven't tried to connect it to the wheel controls because I hate them. I'd disconnect them in my Passat if I could.
