Well folks, the results from the National Swedish Vehicle Inspection agency are in, and approx 27% of all 2001 Freelanders failed, most with suspension and/or steering issues.
A lot of SUVs were up in the 15-20% bracket, but the Freelander earned the dubious honour of the highest failture rate.
The results were sufficiently surprising that the agency went out and bought brand new spares, and upon dismantling (read sawing through and inspecting) found that even new parts were in some cases badly deficient (eg dried out internal lubrication on swivel housings etc).
Their suspicion is that model changes are so fast these days that parts suppleirs are not capable of building up good part manufacture processes.
