All,
I have 2002 Disco2 with 118k, it whines loudly when I start her up, sounds a bit like a groaning power steering pump, but I'm not turning the wheel. Also I would equate the sound to that of a turbo winding up, similar to my old MB 300TD. Any help diagnosing what might be the cause here?

Thanks much, Kevin

more like a whirring growl, sort of like a pump or a turbo whine.

My Disco, in the winter, with a failing power steering pump and some Lucas power steering stop leak in it, sounded just like that at startup until the power steering fluid was warm enough to flow more freely.

Does it only happen on cold starts? Does the noise go away completely after a few seconds or does it slowly fade as you warm up? Does the noise change at all if you rev. the engine or turn the wheel back and forth? Maybe a quick video clip could help us track it down.

If it's a sharp whine that only happens on cold starts and goes away completely after about 30 seconds it's your SAI pump, and it's likely going out.

If it's a low groan that fades as the motor warms up and changes pitch when you turn the wheel, it's probably the steering pump. As LB said above, get some Lucas in it and it should help.

If it's a low grumble that fades only slightly and changes pitch as you rev. the engine, it's likely bearings, either alternator, compressor, water pump, tensioner or idler pulleys.

Hopefully that gets you on the right track.

It was, it was...

not soap poisoning, but my alternator. Took it into my local LR Mech, and the alternator was the culprit. Picking my truck up today.

video upload

I tried to upload a video to the site but was unsuccessful -- once I figure out how to get a video uploaded, I'll post it for others to hear.
