My friend went out to his car the other morning and his truck was making a really ugly sound.. Wouldn't go into to drive nothing.. I stopped by and took a shot by putting it in 4low.. The thing got stuck in neutral .. The mechanic told him 2800 for new tranny.. Any suggestions? At this point he just wants out of the thing.. Truck only had 90k on it..

I had Aamco put a low mileage tranny in mine. They did it 3 times till they found out it was a bad flex-plate that kept wiping out the front pump in the tranny. I just got it back from the 3rd trip back to Aamco. I had to take it back for transmission, and transfer case leaks, wiring harness not put back the way it should have been, a vent tube not attached, and Transmission over-temperature light on when driving a distance. I will see if they corrected the problems. It cost me 2800.00+ for this.

Wow, now that's a horror story.. Where you taking yours off road a lot.. My friend? Never
Don't you dare buy a new tranny till we talk, there are other things that can cause this.
PM me your number and lets talk tomorrow.
Tranny's don't make that noise, it will be a diff or t/case.
X2 Sounds like the transfer case. Could be a linkage problem. Mine (04) kinda got engaged weird one time. It popped out of gear and for a brief second made somewhat of a noise you describe. Mine had a yellow gear warning light pop up on the dash. I pulled over and re-shifted the transfer case while rolling at walking speed. I lube mine and it helped some but it always has only shifted good while rolling a little bit. I never really heard a sure answer if this is normal or not.....?? I just haven't had it bother me enough...yet.
Why didn't you get a second opinion by another shop?
So what is happening to the truck?
Check you tcase shifter!!!

my father has an 01, land rovers linkage on the h-n-l gears is pretty solid, but the piece the linkage itself connects to, a lever system i think it is, is brass, and pretty soft. he let someone borrow it, and while he was driving it made a weird noise, and then lost all power, like as if he was into neutral, id shimmy your hand were the brass piece is (ill try and post a pic) and see if you sheared it off ( what my fathers friend did).id check it out before you plan to buy a tranny.
I PM'd you cell mike.. Thank you
If it turns out you need either a transmission or a transfer case, I have both for your truck. I even have an '04 transfer case so you could add the locking differential linkage to your truck. After you talk to Mike and get sorted what you need, give me a call. I've sure I can save you a ton of money over some of the other prices you've been quoted.
Cheers,
Paul
Ok Paul.. Lets see what Mike thinks
