greetings,

last week I was looking for a radiator for my 1988 rrc, found the radiator, after install and a trip to woods, realized the engine got toasted and will need a rebuild. last year I installed a 200TDI in another 1988rrc I own and dont really want that hassle again. If I wanted a larger engine, which one would be a good fit in place of the 3.5. There seems to be scads of 4.0,4.6 for sale low miles reasonably priced, but I dont know what the pit falls of installing would be or would it be better to rebuild the 3.5 with some performance upgrades if there are any?

thanks

Any 3.9 or 4.2 is a direct replacement. A 4.0 or 4.6 can fit but will require modification so you can use a distributor etc. it can be done but is only really worth it if you are going to use the 4.6 as the 4.0 has the same output as the easy swap 3.9.

The only modification is that you use the timing cover off your existing motor and you need a spacer for the crank pulley.
As you said, no real point in putting in a 4.0 compared to a 3.9 as they are the same motor except for 4 bolt main bearings. But a 4.6 is worth the couple of mods you have to do.

greetings and thanks for your interest and advice,

If I put in a 4.6 would I have to change the intakes from fuel injection to carbeurator? I assume the electronics would not work in the 1988........where would I find the modification parts....also does the 4.6 fit the same motor mounts and trany?

Thanks so much,

You can convert it to EFI if you want.
If you want to stick with a carbie, just get a edelbrock Intack Manifold Intake Manifolds - Range Rover - Performer Series - Edelbrock, LLC.
and a Holley Truck Avenger Carbie Amazon.com: Holley 0-90470 Truck Avenger 470 CFM Vacuum Secondary Electric Choke Carburetor: Automotive
