So I'm taking my time doing my front hub seals and I want to address all the little problems now before I button up my drum again.

Some questions,

1. From this picture can you tell me if I have the 10" or 11" front drums?

2. If you note the pitting on the stub axle, is this a problem? I don't think it is on the race at all.

3. When I reinstall the felt washer, does the rubber side face inward or outward? My old one I took out ripped in two and seemed to have rubber on both sides. My replacements only have rubbber on one side.

Other than that, I think I've gotten off lucky! The bearings look great and the race seems smooth, (the picture looks worse than it does to the naked eye). So, I'll degrease the backing plate and drum, replace the brake shoes, repack the bearings, install the new hub seal, pull-in two wheel studs and then button that drum up and move on to the other side after a victory lap around the block! :drive:

Let me know if I'm forgetting something please and thanks. :D

CanuckIIA,
I don't have a set of the 11" brakes around, didn't those have the two cylinders? I'm not sure.
Yeah, I think if the race is clean you're in good shape...as that's what the inner bearing rides on...but where does the other bearing ride?
Hmm, IIRC the rubber goes on the outside so it and not the felt is in contact with...uh...isn't there a metal washer in there after the felt washer goes on? Guess I haven't had my hubs apart in a while...

Yeah, does look like a fair amount of grease in there...are your shoes relatively grease free? Might want to replace them if they are pretty greasy.

Oh, and what's up with that shoe retaining mechanism...appears to be 4 hammer rivets as opposed to what I've got which is an "O" that bolts onto the leading shoe and the post on the backing plate...hmm, maybe this is indicitive of the 11" setup?

Also, that top spring shouldn't go from shoe to shoe, but from one shoe to the post on the backing plate...this should be in the green bible...

Yeah, that four hammer rivet thingy threw me for a loop too!
Nothing like it in any manual I have. I just grabbed the brake shoes, (which ARE completely soaked in grease), with some vice-grips and pulled down and outward and the one came free. The other one was then easy.

I measured my drum and I do have 11" brakes. That's good I guess. Should stop well when they aren't greased! :D

About that top spring location, I'm not certain, but I think that on the 10" front brakes, I would mount the spring, peg to brake shoe hole. But on the 11" I think it is brake shoe hole to brake shoe hole. The spring seems too long to only go to the peg, and I am not even sure, (while here, hard at work), if there is a peg on the backing plate. I'll check on it tonight.

I will have to recheck where the outter bearing rides. My bearings are perfect as I said before so I don't think the outer one rides on that pitted area.

I've degreased the backing plate and I am gonna rebuild the wheel cylinder while I'm in there.

Thanks for the info on the felt washer and yes the rubber sie faces onto a normal washer just before the castle nut and cotter pin.

If it rains I might start a web page with little tutorials on stuff like this for NOOB mechanics like myself.

Thanks again Bogatyr. You might have brakes like this on the front of your 66 109".

Is this a rear brake?

I'm just going through my manuals again and this looks like a rear IIa brake has been fitted to the front of my Rover?

Is this possible? Is it safe? :confused

Bits and bobs,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

10 inch as fitted to an 88.

2. If you note the pitting on the stub axle, is this a problem? I don't think it is on the race at all.

Will not effect the bearings.

3. When I reinstall the felt washer, does the rubber side face inward or outward? My old one I took out ripped in two and seemed to have rubber on both sides. My replacements only have rubbber on one side.

Rubber facing out. washer then the nut.

Maybe this will help.

I got a call from Mark Nault at Wise Owl Innovations and he said that what I have is rear 109 IIa Backing Plates, Drums, shoes and return springs driven by 88" front wheel cylinders. He mentioned that this is a fairly common conversion.

Now I just need to know where to hook up that spring. :)

Thanks for your help guys.
