ive owned my disco for about 10 years now bought it new in 1996. I've bin having problems with the starter. Every once and awhile it decieds to lock up on me and i cant get the truck started. has any else had this problem and what can be done about it?

Are you sure it's the starter? If so, just get a new one. After 10 years, it might just be time.

well i don't really know whats wrong some times it works some time it doesnt. i guess its not the starter. see when i go to turn my key it locks up on me and wont turn and then i have no way of starting it. I've bin spraying it with wd-40 and that helps it.

I had the same issue on my RRC and to a much smaller extent on my D1. I sprayed some graphite in the ignition which helped. I just live with it, when it locks up for good, then I'll fix it!

This is pretty normal for rovers. Don't use wd-40 as it tends to gumm up after continual usage - although I use it in a pinch - more of a do as I say, not as I do thing I guess. Do as Badger1 says, use some type of graphite. Or military grade machine gun oil works well too if you got it. Don't ask, not going to tell you how I know.

1. how much will it cost to fix the starting problem and what will need to be replaced?
2. are there any thing else i should have checked out when i take it to the shop?
3. dos any 1 know of an east coast shop that can do a full restoration to my truck?
4. how much might a full restoration cost?

Turning Key in ignition

I have a bit of a problem occasionally getting the key to turn on the ignition in my 96 LR. I suspect this is due to either the key wearing a bit after 10 yrs of use or a problem with the steering wheel lock. I have noticed that the steering wheel lock does not always lock after taking the key out. I have also noticed the problem once in a while when I grab the steering wheel and use it for leverage when entering the veh.

Seems to be a problem about every 15 or 20 starts. I've only had the LR for two months now but when I reviewed the work receipts that the previous owner gave me, the problem was first noticed two yrs ago. Of course the dealer had no problem and could not diagnose any.

Hold up there doc, whatcha talking about? What does full restoration mean to you? If you are willing to put that kind of money into your rover, you might want to have RTE have a first go at it or - I can't remember the name...pretty good place, do great rebuilds. ****, it will come to me.

If your engine runs good, put the money into your suspension - RTE - and send your axles to Bill at GBR, have him put in new gears and so forth. If you are not going to run anything bigger than 32's, go for a 3.88 gearing ratio. If you are going to run 33's or bigger, go for the 4.11 or higher gearing ratio. Put a TT up front and detroit in the rear. Bill can do all this for you. By the time RTE and GBR are done with your rover, you will have one of the baddest rovers in your area. Hands down.

If you want a full restoration to orignal, just take your time and buy the year you want with little mileage and save your money.

I would be willing to spend the money if its worth it and I don’t think I can find a 96 like mine. What I would want done is an engine rebuild because it’s got 185,000 on it. I pretty much want all working parts repaired or replaced so it will be reliable enough as a daily driver. i would like to have it in good running order before i start any modifications

Work from the ground up! As long as the motor runs decent start with new tires, suspension, and bushings, you'll be suprised just with that your truck will feel like new! East Coast Rovers up in Maine specializes in LR restorations, but I am sure they are not cheap as they do top notch work.

I had to "fix" mine about a month back as it locked up at Biscuitville now its permantly fixed :buttrock:

what did you fix/replace and how much did it cost

first off you want to check to see if the motor is leaking. It could be heads or anythiing else. Have it checked out.

with a 96 your swivel ball joints could be rusted up. its possbile you could just remove them and have them repainted. possible. not sure though.

if they are good make sure they arent leaking.

also, is your vehicle open for any recalls. There is a recall for the tanks right now and let me say this. if your pump aint been replaced trust me most likely it will be. It will be rusted up. and a few hoses might be replaced as well due to cracking.

anyway, a full restoration might include a paint job.

96 Rover Like everyone has been saying use some lube goes a forever long way. I carry some WD40 in the glove box. Might try some lithium grease and see how that works. It is better than replacing the ignition. It now rarely happens to me.

I have heard Rover stories of engines lasting up towards 400,000mi. Oil changes, plugs, wires, belt, valve job, trany fluid changes, considering all these are done routinely.
