97 disco gas smell in oil

I found a 97 disco in really good shape and can get for the cost of having it scrapped. If you change the oil it starts right up and runs fine. If you shut it off it wont start back up and the engine oil smells like gas. Owner said LR said the ECU needs to be reflashed. Any ideas of what the culprit is?

Bad rings? Does it smoke when run? Evap hooked up wrong and fumes in vacuum lines?
