I found this rubber washer in the expansion tank. Does it go on the cap? I rolled it down to the farthest channel on the cap but that channel has an opening which must be for something. is it ok for the washer to sit over that opening?

Second - if you look closely at the other pic, it looks like a portion of a collar has been broken off. Looks like the collar should be a complete fabrication around the cap. Did it break off? Do I need another cap? The cap has 140 degrees on it; has been on there for some ten years; is this the right cap?

Even if it looks perfect, you need to replace that cap every two years. make sure you get the correct cap which is 19LBS, not the BMW which is identical but 2Bar (29psi).

Those caps are very failure prone.
