Auto tranmission shifter ???

The transmission shift lock on my '98 Discovery has no effect. I can move the handle without pushing the lock button on the side. Anyone know how to repair the problem ??? Thanks for any help ...

By your description it sounds like the nipple (for want of a better word) at the end of the plastic rod from the lever has broken off.When you depress the button,it pulls the rod up which disengages the nipple and lets you move the lever. A new lever will sort the problem.
