I have a 1984 LR 90 and have developed an electrical problem that I need advice on. The no charge light is illuminated when there is NO ignition. Once the ignition is turned on the light goes out. Normally if the alternator had gone I would expect the opposite. I suspect something in the alternator (diode?!) has gone but I am not sure. Has anyone had this problem? Do I need to change the alternator?

disconnect the alternator to see if it goes out. if it doesnt then you have a short to ground. Is it causing a draw.

If it is then get out a wiring diagram and check to see if there is power when there shouldnt be and if necessary run alternative wires from the fuse box to the cluster and to ground to see which one goes off first. If it isnt that then you got a problem with the cluster turning on.
