I have an 04 Disco with 19,000 miles on the ODD. My rear left brake squeal's and I can hear the pads rubbing on the rotors. I think I have a warped rotor. Or does the Disco just have brake's that squeal's some. I was thinking of just up grading to new rotors on front and back and brake pads. Or should I should just replace the pads in back and hope that I have bad pads. Atlantic British has a Ferodo kit for 4 wheels $399.95 on sale now. Or just get Kevlar pads for the front and back and just keep the stock rotor's

All so how hard is it to replace the pads and the rotors? I have the use of a hobbie shop with all the tools with limited help and knowledge. I was wondering how hard will it be. And what are the tips of the trade. I can not belive that with only 19,000 miles I should have to replace any thing.

Stealership said I need all new rear brake pads and rotors. And maybe should repalce front pads at same time. Price tag $1,000.00!!

Any help or ideas would be great!!

I totally believe the price...i read somewhere ONE rotor for my 96 disco was near $160. I too will be replacing my rotors and pads (Cross-Drilled Brembos with Kevlar Pads...btw, Lester at Atl Brit. Told me he was unaware of a combination like this and couldn't tell me if the metal on the brembos will work well with Kevlar pads so if anyone can help me out on this one i would GREATLY appreciate it). SO ANYWAYYY...haha...If you're going to do the job, get yourself the hardware kit that includes the seals and gaskets and other small pieces that need to be replaced when performing a brake job. To remove the hub you need a 2-1/16th Deep Socket (along with a 1/2' Socket Wrench or converter), so if you dont already have one of those, you'll need that if you're going to get anything done. If I do mine before yours, I'll post pics of the job. The job isnt as hard as it is time-consuming (especially if changin all four rotors and pads). I'll keep in touch

Oh sorry, I veired from the first paragraph you wrote...do you feel any vibrations when you brake? If so, then you do have warped rotor. I too have a squeal comming from the rear right. But I've gone one way longer than 19k without changing the brakes. I couldnt tell you why you would have to change them at 19k...actually..19k seems like a formidable time for a brake change right?? (<question to the board)

Wow that is funny.
I had THE exact same problem. Left break squeled, just replaced the pads, and 75 dollars later ( parts and labor ) my breaks are fine again. Then again I take my Disco I to a mechanic down in brooklyn ( does excellent work for cheap ) the job took maybe an hour to do, if not less, they shouldnt be charging you a grand. Although when I used to take it to the dealer they charged me 800-900 dollars for 2 front rotors and 2 new pads ( Rears virtually never wear ) I would just get pads. Usuaully rotors go through 2-3 pad replacements before you get new ones.. Id find yourself a local mechanic rather than a 104.00 dollar an hour dealer. I hope this helps...

using ferdo now. no problems. was using the mintex before and the squealed like something fierce. tried generous amounts to anti squeal and same... so a short answer to your question would be yes, they're quite good :)
take care

Mr.

I bought the Disco S series from a Land Rover Authorised agent in Dubai in Feb 04. It had done about 11K Kms. ( I am in love with the car!!!!) I had to get the front break pads replaced at 21K Kms. and now at 35 K Kms the dealers are suggesting that I replace both front and rear breakpads and discs for a whopping USD 520. (The breaks were very soft and always squealing dont know which side). Does the Dicso have frequent break issues or am I a bad driver. My rear rails (ladder) is rusting and despite being under warranty the dealer is not readyto replace it (I think that's not fair). Its a year and 2 months since I bought the vehicle and they hav'nt yet replaced the defective rear cup holder. I guess most of these problems relate to the dealer not doing something or the other. My Disco rolled out of the assembly line in Ireland ? Any different from the others?
