Does anyone know a place to get my oil changed for less that $60.00? The dealer said, “if you get your oil changed at Jiffy Lube, make sure the teenager behind the counter has changed oil on a Disco before, they can screw it up bad.” That worries me.

Does anyone in the Chicago area have a place they go besides the dealer?

Thanks!

you should be able to get it changed anywhere.. the only thing that the manual recommends that is different than normal, is you should drain the oil, then fill it, then change the filter, so you dont lose prime.

Best bet is to change it yourself. The dealer is just trying to scare you. Nothing magical about changing oil on a Disco. All you need to do is:

1. Order up a filter from RoversNorth, or wherever.

2. Unscrew drainplug & drain the oil into one of those large aluminum foil caserole dishes you can get for a buck or two at the grocery store.

3. Replace old filter with new (expect some dripping). Screw the drain plug back in (important step :) ) You can hand-tighten the new filter,,that wrench-thingy is not necessary.

4. Pour in new oil,,,should take 5-6 quarts

5. Using a cheap plastic funnel, pour the old oil from caserole dish back into the now-empty containers from your new oil.

6. Take the old oil to a Jiffy Lube or wherever,,,they will charge you a very small disposal fee.

Total cost to you is about: $2.00 for foil caserole dish,,, @$2-3.00 per quart of oil retail,,, @$1.00 for the plastic funnel (which you can reuse over & over),,, @$20-ish for the filter depending on brand. A few bucks for disposal fee.

I got the K&N filter cause it has that nut at the end of it , for eazy removal :) .

Also I take my old oil to Auto Zone or any parts store and they take it for a wonderfull fee :Free of charge . :)

Also get your self a 5 qwart jugk of oil from lockal walmart or any simular store . Mobil 1 might be in 1 galon jugs . But you pay less when you get a big jusg like this , and there is only one container that you drail you old oil back into . Or just some how get your self a jug like this and drain it straight in to the jug with the funel ;) .

Friend at work dose that with his Dodge Durango . He got him self that fast drain thingie and puts that hose into the jug , and drians it right into it .

i change my oil myself,i would stay away from Lee......that whole operation is a front for the chicago area drug dealers,i had my 2001 disco2 there a few times for small time work, like 45,000 ,60,000 mile check.cheaper than dealer.Anything beyond that they don't have a clue. change the oil yourself, follow SCSL instructions and you should be fine.

Changing the oil.

I'm going to go for it. Thanks for all the advice guys. A few more questions:

1) Do you guys have the Disco raised up at all when changing?
2) Should I pour oil into the new filter before placing it on? My brother told me to do this on my car.
3) What oil do you recommend? The dealer told me it takes 7 quarts of oil???

I’ll let you guys know how it works out.

Yeah 7qts sounds right.. i dont pour oil into the filter, but i do put some around the top of it when i put it back on.. i don't raise the truck at all, theres enough space to work on it under it..

I thought that you have to drain the oil, then refill with fresh oil. Once the fresh oil is up to level then remove the old filter and replace with one but fill up with fresh oil first. Something to do with "sump pump" I might not have the name right.

Do you guys know what brand and type of oil the dealer uses. In between maintenance internals I can do it myself. The dealer told me that they don't use sythentic.

Thanks

Figman
