Hey we think alike...
here is a design for a rack I want to create... but I'm not a pipe bender or a welder... just an ideator.
The idea was to keep it as low profile as possible (my car has had parking structure / Confer rack conflicts)... also hug the contours of the roof closely without touching to keep load as low as possible.

And.. to be able to climb all over the car like a jungle gym.

I like how you brought one pipe down the C pillar. I thought of that but wasn't sure if it would protrude too much or find a good anchor point. I integrated a sort of ladder (if you use the tire as first step) onto the sides... could be on both sides.
