I have a 99 disco 2 that makes a cracking or popping type sound that comes from the driver side dashboard. It only does it if I hit a bump in the road or if the body shifts. It doesn't do it all the time so it is hard to find exactly where it is. Sounds like plastic cracking but I can't determine what is going on. I have also noticed that the space between the dash and door pillar on each side of the car are different. Any reason for this? Thanks if anyone can help.

No I didn't buy it new I have had it for about a year now. I have just started noticing the noise for the last few months. Would it help to tighten up the dash mounting bolts and if it would where are they? I have tried to find them but have been unsucessful.

Did your Disco already had the SLABS ECU recall performed? If not, take it to the dealer and have them do the recall service for free.DON'T mention the dash noise. With that, they'll have to remove the ECU, besides some parts and stuff from under the dash and refit everything back, so hopefully they'll refit everything properly. If there's something serious they'll let you know about it.I wouldn't try tightening anything in errands unless it's pretty obvious it's loose.Just my opinion.

What exactly is the SLABS ECU recall? How do I find out if it has been performed or not? I had a recall done on the ABS system some kind of bracket or mount. That was performed maybe 6 months ago.

Carlos seems to have a good idea, if you can go with that.
It may be that the dash has been out before and poorly fitted.
Hopefully the noise is something harmless, like a plastic pen rolling around in the glove box. You need to try and simulate the conditions that make it happen. Ask a couple of friends to rock the body while you listen out for the noise. Also try to simulate the suspension compressing.

Does the date around the beginning of the noise coincides more or less with the performing of the recall?I would go to the dealer and ask them to take a look since you have been having problems with a noise after the recall service was performed. It seems to me that this happened after the "ABS" recall was performed on your truck. The SLABS(ABS) ECU(Electronic control unit) is the computer that controls the abs sysytem. The recall service consisted of replacing two parts in the "ABS" modulator, don't remember the name of the parts though, and replacing the "ABS" "ECU" which is located under the dash.

Thanks,
Carlos

When we bought our 99' it had a creaking noise that sounded like it was coming from the dash. It would come and go and seemed related to temperature and body movement or flex. I finally figured out that it was the windshield that was causing the noise. At the factory they rest the windshield on two orange bumpers to allign it prior to installation. If those aren't removed the windshield will rub on them causing a creaking noise. I took mine out and it's been quiet ever since. You have to remove the wiper cowling to access them.

I have an update on the noise coming from my dash. After searching and fine tuning several interior parts I think I have found the problem. Since the weather is getting warmer I have been riding with my windows down. I noticed the noise was not present while my window was down. When I rolled the window up tight with the door open I noticed the window track at the top would flex or bow up. I found that if I didn't roll the window up so tight, no noises. Don't know excatly why this is but it works for now.

Good thing you didnt loosen up the Bezel over the Instruments!, It clamps on and it has these plastic pieces that if worked wrong, could crack and break and you'll find yourself holding the Bezel in place while you accelerate. (Speakin from experience). The noise I get comes from the center of the dash (where the radio, A/C controls are)...its a sound like Plastic wanting to break or as if there was something TIGHTened and it just wants to loosen up abruptly...It's a really annoying sound. ANy ideas?

The only thing I can think of would be the cup holder. Sometimes when I use mine a then push it back in, it makes a noise like a rattling sound for a few minutes until it settles I guess. I remember hearing somewhere that there is a heat cover under the console on the underside of the vehicle that comes lose. Don't really know what else it could be. Hope you find. I know how those noises cant be.
