I bought a used 2005 LR3 and it needs new tires because the front tires are almost bald on the outer edges. I will need an alignment with the new tires and the dealer wants $300 plus for an alignment. The LR dealer told me only an LR dealer should do the alignment for reasons I really didn't understand. That seemed like a lot of money for an alignment. Do I really need to have only the dealer do the alignment or can any tire shop do the alignment? Thx:drive:

In my experience they usually sub it out. And the last one cost me $125 after having the lower control arms replaced by my indie shop. So no, I wouldn't be signing that check. Find an independent LR shop who can put the suspension into tight tolerance mode if need be.

YMMV

That's bull ****!
There is nothing the dealer can do that a good alignment equipped shop can't except bend you over the service counter and still have you leave smiling

I can't say most independent alignment shops are equipped to do a height calibration which I would suggest periodically, and they charge extra for it, and usually only do it if you ask. If I recall correctly, that's about what I paid last time, + for the height calibration.

What are prices at other shops compared to dealer? Is the issue that you're in NYC where everything is expensive? For example, my dealer in ME charges 139 for alignment and the local tire shops are 100. So for 39 bucks more I have the dealer do it because I know/trust them.

I take it they are doing as 4 wheel alignment...
